The 1969-1974 Box Set!!!
So happy with this release! 'The purple dancer' has been my favourite FM song since 1979 or so, and it sounds so crisp and magnificent!

The 1969-1974 Box Set!!!
A nice surprise: 'Lay it all down [alternative version]' is totally different from the 1992 release, and with 8:15 considerably longer.
The unedited version of 'What a shame' is 8:26 and has lyrics. :-) 'Stone' is a short (2:25), acoustic Welch song. The alternative versions of 'Sometimes' and 'Show me a smile' are indeed different versions/takes. |

Mine should be arriving this afternoon. Definitely something that is going to fill my long Labor Day weekend. Great collection of work. And no goat sounds either! :)
Thanks for the updates so far. |

Thanks for the post as I’m PATIENTLY waiting for the delivery today of my box set.😎 |
How does “Good Things” compare to “Don’t Wait Too Long?”
Upset that I preordered from Amazon, but not getting it until next week, especially since I live a mile from a fulfillment center. |
Haven't listened to all of it yet, but here are some initial responses:
The Record Plant show sounds very crisp and clear. "Bermuda Triangle" and "Believe Me" sound especially good to my ears. Future Games is the real gift--the extended versions of "Lay It All Down" and "What a Shame" are very R&B-influenced with punchy horn charts and guitar solos. I understand why the band went with a compressed version of "Lay" for the sake of the band foregrounding its rock roots, but I am not sure why "What a Shame" was originally cut to such a small amount. The extended version sounds really good--I guess for the same reason: they wanted to step away from the R&B association? Stone is a very nice acoustic song. The alternative "Show Me a Smile" is essentially the same as the original without some keyboard fills and without vocal effects on the chorus. Great to have "Dragonfly" and "Purple Dancer" available in a cd format. I wish the band had also included the live-in-studio version of "Crazy Bout You Baby." More soon. |
Update: The Live "Homeward Bound" track is amazeballs!!!!!! The opening guitar solo is blistering and Christine's voice on this sounds way better than it does on the album. Her organ work is pretty damn funky, too. Oh, if only this version were the one that was on Bare Trees!
Wow. Just wow. |
Did anyone else listen to "Mystery To Me" and play "Good Things" right after "The Way I Feel" just to see what it would have originally sounded like?
I remember getting the vinyl in the early 80s at 9 years old - and so curious why that lyric sheet had lyrics for a different song than was on the album! Was cool, at 45 in 2020 to FINALLY hear that song. "For Your Love" of course is more commercial (I guess?) but "Good Things" is classic Bob Welch - could have easily fit on Penguin, Mystery, or Heroes. I personally like it better than the cover version of "For Your Love" - and love that little vocal run Christine McVie does throughout the song with the strange echo effect on her voice. It's been years since I heard the Bob Welch solo version so I'll have to dig that out to compare. "Homeward Bound" live is such a treat. I loved the early take of "Show Me A Smile" - the vocals on the alternate take had the rawness and tone of her vocals on the Christine Perfect album - which I loved. Some alternate lyrics too. "What A Shame" - I almost fell of my chair when the vocals came in - I think it's Danny Kirwan (interesting how no matter which incarnation of the band they meld to sound similar sometimes). "Stone" - the unearthed Bob Welch song - is basically just an acoustic guitar an voice song - nothing that will change anyone's life but still cool to get one more unheard Bob Welch song. I love the CD covers which are direct replications of the LPs - right down to the "Kiln House" and "Mystery To Me" inserts (which are totally authentic with the misprinted "Good Things" lyrics - which actually are now applicable). I love early Fleetwood Mac so this box set is a dream come true for me. And...sorry no unearthed outtakes from Mrs. Scarrot. |
I'm really looking forward to this release, particularly the newly released songs by Bob. This whole period of the band is so overlooked and underappreciated. In spite of all the recent stuff that's gone on with the band in regards to Lindsey, I will always have strong feelings for it.

It doesn't look like these are available digitally :(

Ordered mine from Amazon as well. Received a message that the set would be delivered mid-month, but was pleasantly surprised it was sent as originally stated. I'm super close to Amazon fulfillment centers as well, so I'm confused on why yours was delayed. Haven't listened to everything yet (just MTM and Bare Trees so far), but what I've heard sounds amazingly clear and crisp. Bonus tracks at the end haven't disappointed either. |

One thing I did notice about "Good Things" is how much of the instrumentation is a dry-run for some of the musical ideas in "Bad Loser." Mick's drumming, the guitar harmonics near the end... |

Now that I’ve heard it, I think Bob Weston may have been right. Great song, but the album needed another guitar heavy rocker. |

8 remastered cds for under $50! Damn, I'm really loving revisiting these songs and bonus material all with enhanced sound. Christmas came early this year!
That continuum of Future Games, Bare Trees, and MTM is second only to the Rumours trifecta. |
Mine arrived a few days ago, and I'm so glad to have it. Finally I have great sounding recordings of "Jewel Eyed Judy", "Child Of Mine", "Remember Me", "Bad Loser", and so many more.
Absolutely love the live bonus track of "Homeward Bound" on Bare Trees. The live bonus disc far exceeds my expectations... really love these versions of "Believe Me" and "Why". |

I am not really familiar with the original lineup save a few songs. I would like to add it to my FM collection but not sure if LP or CD is the way to go given the fact I don't really know the majority of the songs. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Do you listen more to CD's or LP's? Whatever your answer is, IS your answer. (Stevie isn't on any of them, just so you know) :D |

If you're just a Stevie fan, don't waste your money because this most likely will disappoint you. I would get the cd's and listen in chronological order. Hope you have fun with it. |

Turns out I was gay, and she was indeed a lot of fun. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. |
Thanks for this thread. Having all of the original albums and many compilations I'm slow to pick up on new "product", most is a re-hash, often of stuff that really didn't need rediscovering. This box set is a bit different, it's got a proper recording of "Purple Dancer" I heard this track when it first came out and was spellbound. I've only ever been able to track it down on a 2nd hand vinyl compilation. The mastering of this set (from what I've heard so far) has been done very well. Thanks again.

Christine was the spark for Fleetwood Mac that really made them so much better as a band. Bob was a later spark where he and Christine could sing together. In the early days before Christine, the Mac was not known for singers. You can hear Christine progress with every album. She really had the knack of writing and performing great songs. I love Sugar Daddy because its a post Stevie/Lindsey era song that easily could have been performed on an earlier album. Dont Stop's shuffle could have been on Heroes without Lindsey's slick production and it still would have been excellent.
My early favorites are Mystery to Me and Heroes are Hard to Find. Bare Trees is good too. "Why" makes Mystery to Me a gem. But overall Chris's songs on Heroes are her best. She got better with every album. Prove your love and Come A Little Bit Closer are insanely good. I wish during the Stevie/Lindsey era that Chris would have remade Come A Little Bit Closer with Stevie and Linsey's harmonies. I think it would have been a smash hit. |
I had never heard the Future Games story until hearing this box set. This set really leaves me wanting more which is both a good and bad thing. I love it but at the same time, I want more but I know this is probably as much as we're going to get from this period of Fleetwood Mac. It's a fantastic release though and there were a lot of little things in songs that I was able to pick up that I hadn't heard or paid attention to before.
|
UHHHHHH they edited Christine's piano solo out of Bermuda Triangle!!! :(

Hi GoldDustWoman, Just to be clear, this new box set doesn't actually feature the original line-up. I'd personally suggest you start with Future Games and work your way through to Heroes Are Hard to Find. There's a nice progression in the music towards Rumours. Then, go back to Then Play On and then onto Kiln House. After that you could start to investigate the original band. Cheers |
Anyone have the CD version? Are the disc in paper sleeves and is there liner notes or a book with credits and text/pics? I guess the vinyl version doesn't contain the bonus tracks?
