5 least favorite Lindsey Mac songs

It's tough but I can do it. BTW, if anyone puts Go Your Own Way on their list, they get banned for 3 weeks :]

5. Big Love - I find the lyrics trite and cheezy. I do love the guitar and drumming but its too unoriginal pop for me.:sorry:

4. Not That Funny - I actually dont hate this song like I used to. Its not even my least favorite on Tusk (anymore). But definitely one of my least favorites on the Lindsey side.:]

3. Oh Diane - Oh God this song is so music box pop that it does not sound like Fleetwood Mac nor Lindsey Buckingham. For the love of God this song made Mirage over Smile At You. God take me now  Empire State all day over this!

2. The Ledge - Sorry Charlie. Its still my least favorite on Tusk. Never liked it, never will. :sorry:

1. Caroline - If I listened to this song 10 times in a row, I would be in a mental institution. Nothing about it is Fleetwood Mac. Its all programmed bass and percussion. The odd chanting in the end is bad too. Give me Family Man any day over this

soul_drifter333 01-18-2022 10:29 PM

1) Bleed To Love Her

2) Bleed To Love Her

3) Bleed To Love Her

4) Bleed To Love Her

5) Bleed To Love Her

Worse song he's ever done, band and solo

bombaysaffires 01-19-2022 12:42 AM

in no particular order:

Can't Go Back (but can you go away?)

Oh Diane (oh no Diane)

family man (love love the acoustic guitar parts, but as a song it feels like a throwaway. How did your mother, father, brother ever make the final cut??)

Murrow Turning Over in His Grave (Let him keep turning right on out of here. pretentious noise)

What's the World Coming To (what's this song coming to??)

elle 01-19-2022 01:18 AM

heh too bad you didn't include solo so i can list dreaded Trouble. :wavey:

of Lindsey's FM, there are not many duds. here's my list in no particular order:

That's All for Everyone
Empire State
Family Man
What's the World Coming To?
Say Goodbye

these are also the only real LB FM duds, imo, but i know some people have strong opinion about TAFE being a masterpiece, for example.

if we are including [official] co-writes, i'd add You and I, Part II. of the unofficial co-writes, Dreams would probably be topping my list.

OMFG How did I forget this one?? Probably because it's sooooooo awful I blocked it out. :distress:

If I had to stick to just 5, then I would put Empire State on and take Family Man off.

I thought about That's All For Everyone. Lyrically it goes NOWHERE, but I'm a sucker for his cascading harmonies so I let it slide.

HomerMcvie 01-19-2022 01:52 AM

IDK if I can come up with 5 Lindsey songs I hate. I've always found most of his songs to at least be palatable.
But-
Murrow is horrible.
Come is the worst thing he's ever done.
Say Goodbye is meh.
Big Love ACOUSTIC- put that sh*t in a grave. Tired and worn out. Full band or let it go.

I'm stalled at 4. I like Family Man, and ADORE Empire State, for those haters.

bwboy 01-19-2022 06:54 AM

Family Man
Not That Funny
The Ledge
Oh Diane
Walk a Thin Line

IMO Lindsey was perfect on White and Rumours- flawless everything and the songs stand the test of time. Starting with Tusk though, he somehow forgot that people have to listen to his songs and find enjoyment in them, although not all bad, his production choices left potentially good songs just hanging.

I like Save me a Place, but not keen on:

That's all for Everyone- good idea, but lyrically goes nowhere, we never get to the reason why he's concluded that's all-but the song isn't quite exactly what we needed.
That's Enough for Me- I like the idea and such but like Christine once said- "**** that's fast"- she's right, and the song is hard to keep up to as a listener.
The Ledge- this could have been a cooker of a track with sensible production and larger than life backing vocals from Stevie- a la Second Hand News- but sounds rushed and poorly executed.
Murrow Turning Over in His Grave- I dig the cool Guitar intro but once he starts singing, Murrow probably actually turned over in his grave.
Can't Go Back- I used to like it but now I don't the music box stuff is annoying and ruins what was building to be the famous trifecta of amazing songs to start an album.

Bubbling Under- most of his Tango songs border on pretentious, but are better overall than the above. If Say You Will had been a 10 song album, some of his tracks were bordering on great, had he dropped the tinny sound.

Bleed to Love Her
Oh Diane
Cool Water
Say Goodbye

I simply can't make a Top 5 as I'm the only guy in the world who find the songs from Tusk and Mirage as truly masterpieces, fun, emotional, long, short, rare, insane, melodical...really good...
So, I can't go with 5, but I would say:

- Big Love (acoustic). I totally agree with Homer, the song had its moment, but it's time to something different, or to leave the song behind. Same goes for Go Insane acoustic!
- I'm So Afraid (studio). I love the live versions. Live has the best one, but The Dance has another very good one. I heard some live versions from bootlegs and sutff which sounded better than the original. The studio version has a rare soul, the final solo is short and has no sense, I can't find a "form" for that.
- Some versions from the SYW album sounded better live. Murrow, Come, Red Rover, Say Goodbye and Bleed To Love Her had another atmosphere live, sounded good. The speedy guitars in all of them at the studio were the beginning of an era of "speedy" songs by Lindsey, which are not bad, but live they sound much better...

Oh man, I love I Know I’m Not Wrong, but it took me a long time to appreciate it. It takes forever to get to the chorus, but when it comes it’s so dang catchy! Monday Morning I like a lot, and Neil did a really good job singing it. But if you didn’t like Lindsey’s version, you probably wouldn’t like Neil’s.

I love the alternate version that appears on the deluxe edition.

michelej1 01-19-2022 06:32 PM

Without making a list, I would like to throw in my vote for Family Man.

I guess I would add WTWCT and Peacekeeper as well.

Nothing against Bleed to Love Her. There was a time when I actually loved the song, but I have enough renditions of that thing for 5 life times. It made me weary.

NEIL? WHO TF IS NEIL?

Oh, you meant cover band Neil...

It should be sacrilege to mention his name in this forum.

I thought he sounded horrible on Lindsey's tunes. And he was the only one without pitch problems and the strongest voice. Just couldn't capture the tone or spirit of the songs.

I smell what you are cooking. For the love of God let Lindsey jam and play guitar. All these geezers complaining because the song jams.

God help us all

I think the wrong Lindsey songs were chosen for him to sing.

If they had to do songs by Lindsey, I've already said Tusk should've been done, I think I'm So Afraid would've worked, and Eyes of the World.

I prefer songs where Lindsey plays guitar and jams. I know he considers himself more than just a guitarist and a guitar is only a small part of an entire song. But my favorite Lindsey songs feature him profoundly on guitar (Wrong, Loving Cup, Go Your Own Way, etc).
Come is ok. I dont hate it and the part of me that loves it is because of the guitar. I swear I am in the twilight zone because Say You Will is so brilliant yet this board hates it. IMHO Lindsey's elements are so profound on all the songs. I am a stranger in a strange land. This board tends to tilt towards Lindsey and Tusk yet trashes Say You Will. Each go hand in hand. I am in the minority too which loves the longer album compared to a commercial 10-12 song album. SYW has so many Tusk like features but people hate it.
I know I'm not wrong
:)

I'm a big SYW fan. But for me, it's Stevie's songs. Come I like because it's Lindsey, Mick, and whoever's on key/organ just letting it out.

Not my favorite songs but I definitely like them. The guitar work is brilliant. Mick's drumming is really good on Murrow too. How anyone cannot appreciate Lindsey's skills on these songs is beyond me. Seriously. Its some of his best work and blows any song of his on Tusk out of the water. I hate it when Lindsey gets edgy with computers and programmed stuff like on Caroline. But pushing Mick and John and Lindsey's guitar to their creative edge is brilliant.
I will never apologize for Lindsey offending you for playing his guitar.

Hurry, run back to your seat Homer, the drum machine to Stand Back just began!

It's not his guitar playing, so stop saying that. It's the SCREAMING, and the fact that it's a sh*tty song.

And even you can see that I'm not the only person who hates it.:angel::xoxo:

I imagine you also have a dart board with Lindsey's face on it?

I suppose I am not as simplistic as to discard a song because of singing alone. I am more about the music and arrangements. There are fantastic songs with bad singing. Would you say this to Bob Dylan? He is a horrible singer. American Idol ruined music.

Oh PUHLEEEEASE, because I don't like a couple of songs?

FM WOULD HAVE FALLEN INTO OBSCURITY BY 1980 IF IT WEREN'T FOR LINDSEY.

Bob Dylan is a highly overrated schmuck. And a horrible singer. At least we agree on something. NEXT! :D

One time, an interviewer was talking to Cher and he complained about Sonny's nasal voice and Cher got upset about that and said that Bob Dylan couldn't sing either, what was the interviewer's point. I loved her for that. I always said of Cher that she might drag Sonny through the mud, but she wouldn't let anyone else do it in her presence.

We don't have many instances of the Macsters being protective of one another. That would warm the cockles of my heart.

I agree. He sounded terrible on SHN and MM. Hold Me he wasn't too bad. He kept Christine in tune for the most part. At least the shows I saw.

with the caveat that i was not (of course!) at any Fakewood shows, from youtube vids i saw, i thought Neil Finn actually sounded great on SHN. i do agree that it had no spirit and heart, but singing was on point and way more similar to the record than Lindsey's more recent live versions. and i think recorded SHN and early live versions were perfection.

i'm assuming that you are being just sarcastic about Tusk, ISA and Eyes because there's no way you can be serious. those are suck typical LB songs, and if you didn't like Neil's version of SHN and MM you would have hated whatever he could do with those songs. who exactly would do the ISA solo or Eyes outro? both those are such typical Lindsey guitars and from what i've heard in vids neither of those 2 guitarists they contracted for Fakewood could "play it like Lindsey."

I went to multiple shows so I've heard Neil sing and I believe he could've sung the songs I mentioned and I'll add I Know I'm Not Wrong, Oh Well (Mike sounded like he was gargling), and Big Love.

Mike or Neil probably could play the guitar parts.
Mike did the shredding on Hold Me, it didn't sound great like Mirage, the soloing and outro to You Make Loving Fun. His soloing on Go Your Own Way and Second Hand News were too country twang... it was like Springsteen on Thundercrack.
