Rock star Courtney Love swapped her grunge rock image on Thursday to enjoy a decidedly all-American pastime with her 12-year-old daughter, Frances Bean.

Frances, Courtney's child with late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, held hands with her mum as they arrived for the final of American Idol – the stateside version of the UK's Pop Idol.

The usually flamboyant singer-actress was dressed down for the event, wearing a long white gypsy skirt, lace-trimmed top and flip-flops. Clearly enjoying the mother-daughter day out, the 40-year-old star kissed Frances Bean tenderly on the forehead before they took side-by-side seats for the highly-anticipated finale.

It has been a difficult couple of years for the twosome – Courtney's highly-publicised overdose in 2003 led to her losing custody of Frances Bean amidst a number of other legal woes. But in January 2005, after regaining full parental rights, the mother-of-one said in a statement: "Life is about choices, and I've chosen to move forward with my life in a healthy and positive way."

I love Courtney. <3 I'm so glad to see her looking and doing better. Frances looks so much like Kurt it's scary. I was watching them on E!, and I was like "Holy ****."

It's really strange to Frances looking so grown up... and she really looks like her father! Wow! Courtney looks like she's gained some weight but she appears happy and healthy. :)

Yeah she says she's gained like 30 lbs since sobering up...although I think she looks better with a little weight..she had gotten way too thin in early 2004..ribs sticking out and all..and you're right Frances is a spitting image of Kurt..very odd

Oh, I love Courtney. It's nice to see her seemingly happy and healthy. I hope it sticks this time.

Wow, her daughter is very pretty! She looks older then 12. I think that she looks like her father, too. I think that is is great that Courtney seems to be getting her life and relationship with her daughter together. Hopefully she will stay on track.

Me neither. Just go to moonwashedrose.com and you can see them there. Frances looks exactly like my friend's daughter, very weird. I'm glad Courtney was able to get her back and also hope she stays clean and happy.
