"All Over Again" (again)

Well, (the ultimate in emotive words in the English language  ), I already put this in the Post-Rumours forum with a little more detail about the Time album, but I wanted to ask the question about this song here for those who don't visit the Post-Rumours forum. Is this song about Chris leaving FM? I figured it was but I wanted to hear from others.

HomerMcvie 05-14-2005 09:04 PM

I think it's her farewell to the band.

I have to agree

I always check Chris' forum before the others, so I hadn't seen the "post" post!
Congrats J on post #1000!

I saw the post in the Post-Rumours forum, but I think I'll respond here in Christine's forum. I always check this board first too. :) "All Over Again" is definitely her farewell to the band-"breaking the chain", "drifting away", etc. It's a beautiful, but sad song. I think her songs on Time may have been her most personal songs on any Fleetwood Mac album, especially "All Over Again", "Hollywood" & "Nights In Estoril". It's easy to understand why she left the band a few years later after listening to these songs.

By the way, I like, but not love Time. It's a lot better than it's given credit for. I really like Christine's & Bekka's songs. Bekka can really sing. But, I'm not too fond of Billy's & Dave's songs. That's pretty unusual for me regarding Billy's songs. I pretty much like everything from him that I've heard, except for his Time songs. I DON'T like "These Strange Times" at the end, though. They should have dropped that track & ended the album with "All Over Again".

I agree about "These Strange Times." I ignore it so much that I forgot to even mention in it my other post. I would drop it and end the album with "All Over Again," as you said.

Since everyone seems to think that her most personal songs are her Time songs, I want to ask which ones y'all think are her second most personal songs, because the Tusk songs come to my mind for whatever reason, particularly "Never Make Me Cry" and "Over and Over." I know those are more universal and that might make them less personal but they sound so blatantly honest and bare that I figured they'd have to be near to her. What do y'all think? And of course there are the ones I haven't heard that I'm not factoring in, like her BTM songs and her 1984 album.

Well, Chris has admitted that many of her songs are "made up" or she's stepping in some else's shoes. Now, I think her Rumours songs were personal, especially "Songbird" & "Don't Stop". She's never talked about her Mystery To Me songs, but I think those songs are about her marriage problems with John & one may even be about Martin Birch. I'm not so sure about Tusk. I've never heard her say anything about those songs. They were probably written a bit before Dennis Wilson. They're still beautiful songs, regardless.

She has admitted that many of the songs on her 1984 solo album were not personal at all, although I believe there may be a little Dennis Wilson on a song or two, especially "Ask Anybody". In The Meantime is a very personal album. She has said so.

Thanks for giving me more insight. Since you mentioned her Rumours songs, do you think "Oh Daddy" is about Mick like some people say?

I don't think it's about Mick. I think it's just another of Mick's delusions of grandeur.

I've always thought it was her farewell to the band although I've never actually heard her confirm it.

It's always difficult to tell with Chris' songs just how personal they are and it's always tempting to think that they're all very personal.

In the Meantime sounds personal and she has confirmed as much herself.

I wonder how Easy Come, Easy Go fits into the loop?

I did ask her on her Q&A on her site whether there were any that weren't personal but I doubt if we'll ever find out know.

I can say with certainty that "Ask Anybody" isn't about Dennis. Christine didn't write that song. It was written by Steve Winwood, who has even been known to play that song in concert.

No, Chris has said "Oh Daddy" is about Mick & his family. I know Mick usually has delusions of grandeur, but not this time. ;)

Chris & Steve Winwood co-wrote "Ask Anybody". I have an interview CD where she said they had to have a drink to get some inspiration to write the song. Also, the liner notes of the CD list both Chris & Steve as co-writers. I have a magazine interview where she confirmed that the lyrics, "He's a devil and an angel" are indeed about Dennis Wilson.

Hmmm. I always thought it was just a Steve Winwood song. Learn something new everyday.
