"Something Big" Anyone?
 

Anyone own this album. I have had it for a while now, but only just feel comfortable making a opinion of it now.

First the negatives: Its very bland, The songs are too light-weight and almost preachy. In short its very, very sappy - to the point that it is sickening (check "No Borders"). Lauren Evan's is a Bekka clone, and to be honest, she is unnecessary. Her vocals are grating, and quite frankly ruin the songs.

But, on the positive side, it has a handful of quite good tracks. Notably "Bitter End" which is infectious, and could have easily been a Fleetwood Mac song. "Looking Into You" is a brilliant track (probably because Jackson Browne wrote it). Todd Smallwood would have been a good asset to Fleetwood Mac in their "Time" era (perhaps more than Dave), and in fact if you like "Time" for more than just the Christine contributions, I have a feeling you would like this very much :)

I would love to know what some of you fellow Ledgie's think :)

I own this album and very much like it actually. It is a fairl positive album:thumbsup:

You're not missing anything. Lola Thomas' voice is nothing special and even Billy Burnette's contributions (bg vocals, guitar, songwriting) couldn't save the album from mediocrity.

Haven't bought Something Big. I've only just recently even given Mick's side projects a chance. I'm still waiting on my copy of "I'm Not Me" from eBay.

Seriously is it worth buying? I wouldn't even know what genre of music to expect from a Mick album.

Probably not, but I would pick it up cheap if you can find it. Its probably just worth it for "Bitter End" :shrug:

Well, John McVie's 'Gotta Band' with Lola Thomas somewhat seems to me like a contractual obligation album, but there are still some fine tracks on there:

-The Way I Do
-Now I Know
-Lost What You Had

And these are still good:
-Evidence
-All That I Was Guilty Of Was Loving You
-You Just Left Me Lonely

The band playing is solid and there's Mick Taylor guesting on guitar. I can recommend it, but the songs sound more like bar/lounge music than the pop of FM. In my CD collection, I file it under T for Lola Thomas.

I didn't care much about 'Something Big' when it came out, though I should probably give some of Mick's Zoo discs a try, because of their Billy Burnette appearances.

The only Mick solo cd I have is "Shakin' the Cage" because of Bekka's work. Her songs are good but the Billy Thorpe influence is over the top (IMHO). They would have been better off to go one route or the other... so suffice it to say, I do alot of track skipping with it. :wavey:

I think John's album is pretty good. I love "Evidence," "Now I Know," "The Bigger The Love" (which John said was his favorite song ever in a 1990 interview the Mac did in Japan), and "One More Time With Feeling" (which has killer backing vocals from Micks other bassist George Hawkins). "Lost What You Had" isn't bad, somewhat bland, but no more than anything from the last few Fleetwood Mac albums. I really like the album, but then, my favorite part of any Fleetwood Mac album from "Mystery To Me" onward is John McVie's bass playing. If you gotta have a McVie bass line, this album does not disappoint.
