Country Joe McDonald

Has anyone ever heard the recordings Peter Green Made with Country Joe McDonald. of Fish fame? I read that due to contractural constraints Peter was named "Rockhead" on the credits. I have seen reference that Country Joe has CDs remastered from that album on his website. Being gunshy I am looking for guidance on this one.

Hi maryellen healy! :wavey:

The album is called "Hold On - It's Coming" and was released in 1971, and I think it was recorded in 1970. I have a CD reissue of it from mid-90s.

Peter appears on three tracks "Air Algiers", "Only Love Is Worth This Pain" and "Mr. Big Pig". And yes, he plays great... maybe a little more restrained than his wildest Mac-flights, but I love it.

The back cover says that Peter Green plays electric guitar. However, inside the sleeve the personell for each track is listed, and Peter's name appears nowhere. Only "Mr. Big Pig" has listed "Rockhead" as guitarist

Hi, I have the CD called "The Best of Country Joe McDonald - The Vanguard Years (1969-1975)" and there is "Air Algiers". Personell is listed (Peter Green - guitar, Vic Smith - bass, Chicken Hirsh - drums ).

Krzysztof

Thanks Krzysztof :)

The CD I have lists the following personell:

Air Algiers:
Joe McDonald: Vocal, acoustic guitar
Vic Smith: Bass, electric guitar
Chicken Hirsh: Drums

Only Love Is Worth This Pain:
Joe McDonald: Vocal, acoustic guitar
Alex Dmochowski: Bass

Mr. Big Pig:
Joe McDonald: Vocal
Vic Smith: Bass
Richard Sussman: Piano
Rockhead: Electric guitar
Greg Dewey: Drums

Alex Dmochowski is the bass player on Peter's The End Of The Game album. He plays on a couple of songs on this album too. So maybe he was the link between Peter and Joe..?

Or maybe they knew each other from Fleetwood Mac's trips to the US..? I seem to remember seeing an old poster (Fillmore, Warehouse etc...) with both bands on it. I wonder if they crossed paths....

Nick Buck (End Of The Game pianist/organist) also appears on one track.

Alex was also the bass player in the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation (4 albums). Of course we all know that Peter played with drummer Aynsley in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

There sure are a lot of great musicians from GB

sharksfan2000 11-21-2006 11:31 PM

Nick Buck went on to play with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady in Hot Tuna.

What ever Happened to Nick Buck?
Legend has it (please correct me if Iam wrong)that he was with Peter Green when they met the Strange guy in new orleans that stole Peters soul.

I am also interested in The fiddle player who played on leaving town blues(nick Puckett?) Does anyone know if he played elsewhere after that. He had a sweet mournful sound

Don't know what happened to Nick Buck (or Nick Pickett either). I did a Google search on Nick Buck a couple of years ago and didn't find anything useful. I believe Martin Celmins did write about Buck being with Greeny in New Orleans that time you refer to, and that it was the last time they saw each other.

after hot tuna, nick buck continued working with jack casady in svt until the very late seventies ('79 ?). then he was with roy loney up to around '81 or so. after that i'm not sure what he did.

I've just bought VANGUARD-AKARMA CD edition "Hold On It's Coming" VMD 79314 - AK 171/2 from 2001. The staff on these tracks is as above. But the general list of musicans contains - Peter Green: guitar (Tracks 2,3).

I'm sure the Rockhead is Peter's pseudonym - but I can't understand what caused these inaccurate descritpions :))

Apart from that this AKARMA edition is beautiful - mini LP vunyl replica

Thanks for posting, Krzysztof!

I didn't know about any newer CD release than the one I have from mid90s. But no extra bonus tracks, no?

Hi,
your CD edition is probably published by ONE WAY RECORDS from Canada.

I suppose my CD is a piece of AKARMA 4-CD set A Reflection on Changing Times - I bought it on eBay from Israel as a single sealed CD.
There is no extra track - simply 10 tracks as on LP.

Regards
Krzysztof
