Yum. This is terrific. THREE on a soundtrack. Wow. That's a first.

This will do better than Adele's Skyfall! Well, no, but we'll enjoy it just as much.

THIS IS 40

The soundtrack for Judd Apatow's upcoming This Is 40 has already generated some buzz thanks to Jon Brion's score and a contribution from Fiona Apple that reportedly landed her in some hot water with her label. Now, the details of the soundtrack have been confirmed.

While Pitchfork notes that Apple's original tune, "Dull Tool," was originally pegged to appear in the film but not on the soundtrack, that song is indeed included here. Other artists who offer up original material are Norah Jones, Lindsay Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac) and Graham Parker. Brion produced all of these contributions.

A press release also notes that Ryan Adams and Wilco created tracks specifically for the album, although in the former's case, this simply means a pair of live cuts. As for Wilco, their contribution is called "I Got You," but it's unclear how this is different from "I Got You (At the End of the Century)" from 1996's Being There.

Rounding out the tracklist are previously released contributions from the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Loudon Wainwright, Yoko Ono and the Avett Brothers. There's also one selection from Brion's score.

The soundtrack arrives on December 11 through Capitol Records. The movie will follow on December 21. The film stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, who reprise their roles as Pete and Debbie from 2007's Knocked Up.

This Is 40 - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack:

1. Yoko Ono - "I'm Your Angel"
2. Norah Jones - "Always Judging"
3. Graham Parker with Punch Brothers - "What Do You Like?"
4. Lindsey Buckingham - "Sick of You"
5. Paul Simon - "Rewrite"
6. Ryan Adams - "Shining Through The Dark (Live)"
7. Paul McCartney - "Lunch Box/Odd Sox"
8. Lindsey Buckingham ft. Norah Jones - "Brother & Sister"
9. Jon Brion - "Theme 1 (Debbie & Oliver)"
10. Graham Parker & The Rumour - "Watch the Moon Come Down"
11. Loudon Wainwright - "Days That We Die"
12. Lindsey Buckingham - "She Acts Like You"
13. Fiona Apple - "Dull Tool"
14. Ryan Adams - "Lucky Now (Live)"
15. Wilco - "I Got You"
16. The Avett Brothers - "Live & Die"
17. Graham Parker & The Rumour - "Protection (Live)" (digital bonus track)

Excellent news!

I'm not keen on movie sound tracks but Lindsey has used them for some of his best songs in the past. I'd rather they come out like this than stay in a cupboard for another 2 years :)

Taking Lindsey's songs on their own, add in a couple of the tracks from live album and he could release it as a mixed studio/live EP.

I can't wait to hear these!

I have to say, I'm intrigued by the Norah Jones collaboration. It'll be nice to hear him singing a track with somebody who has more than half an octave in range.

And it's only just more than a month away! He kept that one quiet.

Judd Apatow movies normally have great soundtracks i think. if i remember correctly there was a time we tweeted him that he should use LB's music in his movies and also discussed it here why he never does considering he's a fan and they are friends. so this is great!!

yeah, it will be really interesting and nice to hear him singing with Nora Jones.

i like your title better - it's much more descriptive of what it is.

maybe mods can consolidate it with "2 new songs" thread but under the title you gave it here (b/c it's not but 3 new songs anyway)?

That's awesome! Makes me like Judd Apatow even more!

I think Judd Apatow is truly awful, but I cannot quibble with his sense here. It's interesting how Apatow and Sandler (who I do love) have a thing for Lindsey.

TrueFaith77 11-09-2012 10:40 AM

How do y'all feel about him working with Norah Jones? I've never responded to her one way or the other as a musician, but as an actress she was wonderful in MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS. Also in that movie, Cat Power (about whom I have no feeling as a musician) should have been acclaimed as the year's best supporting actress.

Intrigued to hear him do such a collab as they are rare outside the Mac.

shackin'up 11-09-2012 10:55 AM

Looking forward to that one! Fabulous news!
