I doubt that the MTM lineup would have had the massive success that Rumours brought. But, I think they could have been successful on a smaller scale.

I think you and Lis have a point. I wasn't even taking the craziness of the legal battles into consideration. And I'd also forogotten how Bob Welch was doing a great deal of the work for the albums as well.
