I saw something a while ago about the life of Marlene Dietrich and it seemed from the program that she was very cruel to her daughter and forced her into some really weird situations. My memory is hazy, it was years ago when I saw this. So maybe her "sow of an offspring" was just getting back at her for past misdeeds on Marlene's part, kind of like Christina Crawford. Although, I'm a little puzzled by her too; wasn't Mommy Dearest based on her memoirs? I guess Joan's portrayal could be a bit, um, skewed if Christina had an axe to grind for whatever reasons
