The early band (1967-1971) sounds nothing like the Rumours-era FM. Once Bob Welch joined in '71 (and Christine surfaced as a full member), it started to go in a more soft rock/singer-songwriter direction, but it was still pretty dissimilar to the Buckingham/Nicks band.
I'd say that the Peter Green, Bob Welch, and Buckingham/Nicks incarnations of FM are three different bands, for all intents and purposes.
