I finally got my hands on the Heroes songbook and that, along with the music I'm reading from the Mystery songbook, reveals what a complex, interesting songwriter he is. Just tooling around with some of the tunes--Born Enchanter, Coming Home, Angel--is so much fun! The chords and rhythms are interesting.

He might not have had the voice or onstage charisma that sells mega-millions of records, but he could write really strong songs.
I agree with all this, but I wonder where it all went wrong? There was a period in the seventies when Bob Welch should have been a much bigger name than he was. He wrote good songs, he wrote good music, and he sang well.
