I think it's just that BM was so mainstream. For whatever reason, it hit big and was seen by many. It could have been contrived, it could have been happenstance, but many never saw anything like it before, and really, the true aim of movies like this is not to entertain gay audiences - but rather to humanize gay people for straight audiences, and BM did a good job of that, overall.
