That’s why her more frequent statements about political matters since the 2000s have seemed inappropriate and empty and rather addle-headed. Those statements (and songs) feel superficial and desultory coming from her because of her lifelong grudge toward an old boyfriend. That’s what
really animates her, and we all know it. She doesn’t care about bigger matters. She cares whether her old boyfriend is smirking.
