In search of great guitar solos!
I love great guitar solos! My favorite has to be Lindsey's "I'm So Afraid" on the Live in Boston DVD. A close second is David Gilmour's "Comfortably Numb" on the Pulse DVD back in 1994. I'm looking for some more long solos done live (where they can stretch it out) and on DVD or at least on YouTube. Does anyone have any other ones that can come close to those two? Everytime I hear them I zone out and almost go into a trance. I love it!

The great Michael Schenker, one of my favourites. Solo starts around 3:16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqpPQNcJkrU David Gilmour - Marooned live on the Pulse tour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaqXNk2jgBg Jeff Beck - Where Were You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofPL7k68HJg Doug Aldrich on Crying In The Rain by Whitesnake - solo at 2:58. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1fefbs4OIY And finally 2:00, Tony Iommi playing what's probably my all time favourite! |

Thanks Rick. I'll check them out. Speaking of Jeff Beck, my favorite album of his is Flash. The third or fourth song on it (I don't have it with me right now) has him at the top of his game. He rips his guitar to shreds from beginning to end! It starts off with a bang and ends with a bigger bang. I wonder what the best live version of George Harrison's "While my guitar gently weeps" is? That song has great potential for an elongated guitar solo.

Steve Howe is the best, period. I just squee'd when I searched him on youtube and found that he'd posted a ton of videos of himself just plucking the guitar riffs/solos from the classic Yes albums. I'm afraid I'm going to have to go through these and finally learn to play something other than "Mood for a Day!" Lindsey Buckingham is okay as a guitarist but Steve Howe is the master class- he makes it seem so effortless. |

Layla has to be way up there! Though I'm not certain which part is Duane Allman and which part of it is Eric Clapton, I love it. I've heard conflicting things about Allman and Clapton's playing on it since I was a kid, but I don't care, it's amazing. I still find it thrilling and brilliant.
Lindsey's fade on the title song of 'Tango In The Night' gives me equal euphoria, though it could go on and on for much longer than it does on the cd. Has LB ever performed that song live in his solo shows? I think it's one of his career highlights. Gorgeous song, start to finish. I hope Mr. Buckingham performs 'Tango' one day soon, with or without Fleetwood Mac. And 'Walk A Thin Line' already! When he was good, he was really good, stranger! And way more than 'okay' in my opinion. More like 'oh wow'. Last edited by Nikolaj; 08-13-2010 at 03:10 AM.. |

I agree with that.
Anyways, onto guitar solos, look for Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin, but the version from How the West Was Won. Aside from being an awesome extendeed guitar solo, Jimmy Page starts playing part of Bach's Bouree in the middle. |

If you can find the version that Tom Petty & The Heart-burys did at George's HOF induction with Prince on lead guitar....that's just effing amazing. Otherwise, search out the version from George's Live In Japan album. In regards to "Layla"...Duane Allman plays the opening signature riff (which he came up with) and all the slide parts

Thanks for all the good replys. I will see if I can find the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD. I did see the Prince guitar solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". It was pretty darn good, I must say. Eric Clapton also does a great job on the concert that was held after George died. I could listen to that solo for hours. Lindsey's "Tango in the Night" is fantastic. I can't figure out why he doesn't play that in concert, either! Is there a good live version of "Free Bird" out there?

Ooo, fun topic! I'll do various metal ones, 'cos I'm a metalhead:
"Return to Serenity" - Alex Skolnick of Testament - and bonus (stunning) acoustic-y live version. Gahhh, so good. "Voice of the Soul" - Chuck Schuldiner of Death. Chuck is the very definition of win. "Mr. Crowley" - the one & only Randy Rhoads. We all know this song, but here's a great live version anyway. Pretty much anything Dimebag did with Pantera. Pretty much anything Ritchie Blackmore did with Rainbow. "No More Tears" - Meeestah Zakk Wylde "Kissing the Shadows" - Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom. Thank gawd for Finland is all I'm sayin.' Caveat: CoB are death metal-ish (they call themselves extreme metal, but have death, black, power, thrash and other influences). Even if you are not a fan of that sort of music, check out the awesome happening from about 2:44 onwards. I'll come back when I'm not so doped on cold meds and can think of more.
