I'm so sorry to here about this My bosses dog has been battling the same thing for about 7 years now. He does fine (now) but it took awhile, and he became just a tad more protective (maybe even a little more agressive ) because the poor little thing can't see I wish all of you the best of luck Quote:

Thanks, guys. My heart hurts so bad. I don't really know how to protect him from the puppy, who jumps up on his face all the time. I'm going to ask the vet what to do about this also. Sara and I both are just going to have to get used to helping Max in a different way. He made it up the stairs the other day, but couldn't go down. I picked him up and helped him out, but after reading, I learned that I shouldn't do that. I'm gonna have to use treats to retrain him, and scent to help guide him. Sara is gonna have to look out for him instead of him looking out for her. It's gonna take some time for us to figure out how to live with a blind dog.

I'm so sorry to hear about that It won't be easy at first - but I've had several friends who had to basically re-train their dogs after they'd lost their sight and they went on to function fine and continue to be happy dogs... I wish you guys the best and I hope the pain gets taken care of soon, poor guy. |

Maria, that's so sad about Max. But I'm sure he'll learn how to get around, in time. I've got an old cat, about 15, who's going blind. I think shadows are all she can see now. She just has to walk slowly now, because she bumps into stuff. But, she's otherwise happy as a clam. Actually, she was pretty anti-social, her whole life, but has gotten completely social in the past year. My aunt guesses it's because she can't see now, that she's become more dependent.

That's really sad about Max, I am so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you and Sara will do an awesome job of getting him used to it and learning how to be the best owners for him. You're already doing good in that you care so much and are researching the best ways of helping him- many would've given up right away, which is so sad- he's going to learn how to get around and be the same dog he always was!
Does anyone here have any experience with pet rabbits? We're planning on adopting a rabbit in a few weeks and I've been doing all the reading I can get my hands on about it. We can't get a puppy in our apartment, and cat allergies make them impossible. A friend just got a rabbit, and she is the sweetest little thing and it seems like they'll actually be the perfect pet for us! |

Love everyone's newset pet pics. And I'm always thrilled to see another Boxer, so thanks, Moonchilde!
Maria - Sorry about your dog, and I agree with everyone else here - it will take some time & effort, but you guys will be fine. You're a wonderful person to take on the challenge - unfortunately many others probably couldn't (or woulnd't) do the same. Quote:
I don't personally, but we know 2 families with pet rabbits. They think they're awesome. My niece named theirs Banana. The rabbits are really quiet, good with kids, sometimes a bit skittish. No problems that I've heard about. |

So I took Max to the vet this evening. He is definately completly blind in both eyes. They want to go ahead and remove both for his comfort. I'm not sure what to do yet. They gave him some pain meds and told me to come back in 3 weeks. Gives me time to figure out what to do with him. Bless his little heart. He acts better today then he did yesterday, though.

Thanks. I know it will eventually get better for him and us, too. We just have to learn how to constantly annouce ourselves to him. He's quickly understanding "watch out Max"... haha! He seems to stop or slow down when we say that to him. It's a start.

I really need some honest opinions.
After telling a few people about Max, I've had some mixed opinions come my way. Now I'm just a little confused. If he dosn't adapt well to being blind, meaning, getting snappy or mean towards people and the puppy, would you put him down? I've had so many people tell me that if his quality of life is less then what he was used to, then it's time to put him down. While I agree to a point, at the same time, I wouldn't put Sara down if she went blind. If he adapts to being blind, and he's just as happy as he was before, I can't see any reason to put him down. My heart hurts. I can't quit worrying about this. Please share your honest opinions, regardless of what they are. I trust you all here!
