Is this going too far?
Did anyone else see this article?
http://www.courttv.com/news/2004/011...online_ap.html This is terrible that the families of victims need to deal with this kind of trash. When I see stuff like this, I often think of how terrible it must have been for Daniel Pearl's family to have his "execution" video all over the place. How far is too far?

Ugh..that is so sad!!! I know there are first amendment rights etc...BUT prisoners sort of lose their rights when commiting such a heinous crime right? I mean come on...why not just take that one away as well? don't do the crime if you can't do the time or whatever....Also the families could just not look at that stuff...but it's probably just maddening for them to simply know that it's out there!

Well, inmates have it better off than tax-paying citizens, so I'm not surprised that they have access to the internet. I could care less if they do use the internet, but for cripes sake, do something to protect against this type of ****. It's disgusting.

Folks, we can't have it both ways. If we are going to sit in our couches and laugh while people are tormented by TV producers and eat worms to compete for money, while headlines are filled with the latest celebrity shockers, and radio waves are filled with the likes of Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh, why should we shocked at this? I don't think banning this stuff from the Internet is the solution, not to mention that it is unenforceable anyway.

It's sick. However, I don't know that there is anything that can be done about it.

Um...
WHY do inmates need access to the internet?

Hmmm.... I don't think they have access to the Internet. It appears the inmates send this stuff to people who put it on the Internet. For this to stop, you would have to criminalize the act of posting it, which means you would create more laws that would in turn create more criminals. And that's a bad idea. We need to decriminalize behavior rather than otherwise. There are still too many sex laws on the books that don't make sense (though they are rarely enforced anymore) and a lot of drug laws need to be thrown out.
But the larger issue is not that inmates have direct or indirect access to the Internet. The issue is the consumerism of this ghoulish rubbish by average Americans. As I said, people are watching TV shows in which participants are essentially tortured and they call it entertainment. They are lapping up ghoulish details on Court TV shows. Posting a murderer's ramblings on the Internet is just further down the spectrum of this horrifying culture. |
