I miss 80's/90's Janet Jackson as well. The Velvet Rope had it's moments, though. I particularly loved What About, Together Again, and Every Time.

I saw Tina Turner live in Manchester last year with a bunch of friends and my dad. It's one of the best gigs I've ever been to - the atmosphere was AMAZING! Damn, she's doing well for 70 (69 then). Both of these songs have been in my head today - both are from Foreign Affair (1989).
You'll know the first one - from the tour dvd... This one is a bit of a forgotten gem but it's amazing. Tina doing some proper kick-ass blues here... I couldn't find a decent HQ vid from 2009 tour but she did it on that one too.
