I think the future of FM was predicated on Christine and Stevie. Since Christine is not coming back, I think Sheryl was a compromise. But this is just speculation. In any case, based on what we know about the turmoil within the band during the SYW sessions and Stevie's most recent interviews, I do think Stevie would have refused to return to FM unless the situation was made more palatable for her. And Mick knows better than to try and soldier on without Stevie again. Ain't gonna happen.

So choose: Sheryl + FM or no FM at all?

Quote:
If so, is the motivation to make Fleetwood Mac more marketable? Sheryl Crow's previous release tanked big time.
SC's latest album is doing quite well, actually. She's getting lots of radio play, which is saying a lot for a 46-year-old female rocker. And in case you haven't checked it out for yourself, Detours is a damn fine album. A couple of clunkers, but the most consistent SC album in a long time.

Sure, FM would like to be marketable. But there is also a legacy that everyone, including Stevie and Lindsey, are extremely proud of. As such, they have an interest in preserving and adding to the legacy, but not at the expense of being miserable and in constant combat with each other. That's where SC comes in- the interpersonal and musical mediator. IMHO, I believe SC is being brought in to babysit, as well as to change the political dynamic.

Quote:
Fleetwood Mac is generally considered to be a lauded dinosaur in the music industry, and not in the main demographic that buys music now, song by song off of ITunes. A band this old and legendary should just be concerned with making good music, and dispence with the antiquated notion of making a "hit."
Yes and no. FM's legacy was not built upon making "good music" in the vein of critics' darlings like the Jayhawks, Patti Smith, and Richard Thompson. Their legacy is based upon making good, intensely personal music that also happened to be consistently successful commercially. Although each FM album has had lots of wacky, idiosyncratic elements, you could depend on it to crank out 3 or 4 monster singles, especially by Christine. Now that the primary hitmaker is no longer in the band, the pressure is on to keep up the momentum. Expecting FM to suddenly become an "art" band is just like asking a zebra to lose its stripes.

Quote:
However, if Sheryl pops up in guest appearances like Stevie shows up at Tom Petty shows, the more the merrier! It would be cool if other artists were surprise guests as the tour progresses.
The fact that she is being factored in a year beforehand is a clear indication that her involvement will go far beyond merely "jamming" with the band. It's so premeditated. I do believe that she will be functioning as Christine's replacement in the band, as well as tackling other instruments as needed. Everyone can agree that she is no Christine; however, she is, by far, the most qualified and acclaimed musician (as well as being a friend to the band) to assume this role.

I have no idea whether this will be a fruitful collaboration. However, I have every reason to be optimistic based upon their respective track records. There really is something to be said about having 3 singer/songwriters in a band, especially when they are so talented and so different.

What I am really hoping for is an album with the five of them ..Anything to get La Nicks to commit at least a few more songs to record and I think she may be more open to Sheryl working on her songs now than LB. As for the tour I wouldn't really go out of my way for it but considering where I live I probably wouldn't have to.

It was in the Buffalo News a few days ago, so the news is everywhere. It was still that exact same blurb with it ending Sheryl wants to sing SHN and The Chain. I really wish Sheryl would follow up her out of the blue comments with an explanation. Or Mick or someone shed some danm light.

Sheryl Crow used to be a background singer for other artists, among them being Don Henley, before her own solo breakthrough. She's a competent songwriter and she's got a good voice, too. With her 2nd album, she has proven that she's a good producer, too. So why not?
She may not be "from the 70s", but "from the 90s" instead, but I think that kind of rejuvenation would do the band some good. I can imagine Lindsey deciding to opt out and focus on his solo career for this time around, should he not like to have Sheryl in the band. I'm happily expecting his next solo album, the long-rumored "rock album". Sheryl's most recent disc sounds fine to me, and I hope this is not a publicity stunt for the album.
I'd prefer Sheryl to produce another Stevie album to her joining FM, but if that's what the band is going to do, it's fine with me, as long as they also record a new album together under the FM name, which is NOT produced by John Shanks.
Now, there is the question of guitarists. Lindsey? Rick Vito? Billy Burnette? Jeff Trott?

Crow, Fleetwood gig just Rumours

By JANE STEVENSON - Sun Media
http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Artists/C/...68986-sun.html

Turns out those reports last week of Sheryl Crow hooking up with Fleetwood Mac next year might have been a bit premature.

Crow told Sun Media yesterday that while it's something she would like to do, given her long friendship with Stevie Nicks -- which dates to when they worked together on Nicks' 2001 album, Trouble In Shangri-La -- it's still an idea that's in the early stages.

"We don't even know -- all that stuff is rumours," she said. "We are just in the middle of figuring out if we want to collaborate, and what we're going to be doing, and what that's going to look like."

Still, Crow said she's enthusiastic about the possibility. After all, she wore a "full shag" hairstyle in high school in the '70s, emulating Nicks' famous feathered 'do.

"Oh, my gosh. It would be so much fun. And I'm a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac -- the band and the people, obviously the music. And also I just love Stevie. I grew up really idolizing her, and then when I got to work with her, like, 10 years ago, I think I was stunned by how much of an artist she really is -- a fully-realized artist, not just a songwriter."

Nicks is on a spring/summer solo tour, including one Canadian date so far -- at Casino Rama north of Toronto on June 18. Crow also plans to hit the road in July and August, with Canadian dates expected in September.

Detours worth the trip

Sheryl Crow called her new album Detours for good reason.

In the past two years, the 46-year-old singer-songwriter split from her fiance Lance Armstrong, was diagnosed with breast cancer, adopted a baby boy (Wyatt, now 11 months old) and moved to Nashville.

But Crow said all of the experiences taught her how to put herself first by learning to say no and not caring about the repercussions.

"That was major for me," said Crow, looking as gorgeous and as fit as ever yesterday at a Toronto hotel, sporting long, curly blond hair and dressed casually in a short-cropped leather jacket, tight jeans and leather boots.

"(So was) the other idea of not being distracted, of really experiencing everything that happened at that time."

Her feelings ranged from anger to disappointment; from sadness to grief to fear. She faced those head on, "so that when I was done with it, I would be done. And I really feel like I'm done with it and I turned a corner."

For the record, Crow said she feels great, physically.

"I'm two years out and as far as I know, I'm cancer free," Crow said.

Significantly, Detours reunites Crow with Bill Bottrell, who produced her 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club. The second experience was "so easy and so organic," they're going back into the studio again, sooner rather than later.

Maybe the result will be her long-awaited country album, now she's living in Nashville.

"I don't know that we'll ever limit ourselves," Crow said. "When he first came down, I said, 'You know, I've been thinking about making a country record.' And he said, 'Let's just don't put any kind of restrictions on it. We'll see where it takes us.' "

Where Detours took Crow was a combination of highly political and personal songs. In the latter category, she writes about her radiation therapy (Make It Go Away), the breakup with Armstrong (Detours, Now That You're Gone, Drunk With The Thought of You, Diamond Ring, Love Is All There Is) and the self-explanatory Lullaby For Wyatt.

And while Diamond Ring features Crow's often-strained, emotional vocals and lyrics -- "Diamonds may be sweet but to me they just bring cold feet" -- she wants people to see the humour in it, too.

"I hope that people will hear the tongue-in-cheek (nature) of it, obviously," said Crow, who was engaged twice before Armstrong came along. "And I don't know how many relationships have tried to be salvaged by people saying, 'Well, she wants to get married so I'm going to get engaged and I think that will fix everything,' or, 'Let's have a baby,' or, 'Let's buy a house.' All these things that actually really create a lot of stress wind up undermining the stability. And that's really what it's about, particularly having gone through three unsuccessful engagements. It was fodder for lyric writing ... (to) investigate it, (to) look at the absurdity of it."

Although she said she's dating, the current main man in Crow's life these days is Wyatt, who was in the studio with her at age three months and will be on her tour bus when she hits the road this summer.

"(Touring with him) is going to be challenging and fun and inspiring, and it's going to be very exciting," said Crow. "He's so social and he's growing up with so many people in his life that it will be interesting when he realizes one day that not everybody is waiting for him to do the next cute thing."

Crow is also happy about her decision to raise him in Nashville, where her family is a three-hour drive away.

"L.A.'s a great place to visit, but the whole celebrity thing kind of got on my last nerve. I haven't seen any paparazzi (in Nashville) and I'll walk around with Faith Hill or Sara Evans or whoever, and I never see them. And (Wyatt) will have a very normal upbringing and won't be just another kid of a famous parent."

Sheryl's here in Canada on a promo tour and she's pretty much on every entertainment tv and radio show we have. Here's an interview she did yesterday on our local Toronoto radio station and she talks about the FM rumour and Stevie.

Here's the link if you want to hear the interview.

Click on the first one on the right "Roger, Rick & Marilyn - Thursday March 20, 2008". Fast forward to about 28:33. It's really short but sweet.

How's she gonna say it's just "rumours" when it came out of her damn mouth? I don't get that at all. I can understand calling it premature.. but she said it, so that would make her the "rumour"-monger, no?

Exactly. She spoke a little too soon if you ask me.

There are also rumours Crow will soon hook up with Fleetwood Mac for an unspecified project, but she's playing coy about the situation for now.

"We're just talking and kinda dreaming about what we could do, collaboration-wise. Could we tour? Could we collaborate in a recording studio?" she says.

"We're not really sure what we're doing yet, but it's great fun to think about. As a kid, I pored over those records and I had my hair cut like Stevie Nicks."

Has Stevie's artistic legacy come down to this, then?
