Yoko Ono is special guest at new Museum of Liverpool opening

DURING Yoko Ono’s first visit to Liverpool in the 1960s she invited people to snip off her clothing for her performance art work Cut Piece. In 2004, she hung a giant photograph of a naked breast from St Luke’s “bombed out” Church and suspended images of women’s nude body parts from city centre lamp posts.Yet her greatest mark on the city was far less controversial – she bought John Lennon’s childhood home and, in 2003, donated it to the National Trust.

Mendips was so important for me,” said Ono, sitting in her hotel suite ahead of last night’s Museum of Liverpool VIP reception. A scale-model of the Woolton semi is one of many items connected to the world’s most famous couple that features in the displays.“I felt I had to definitely not let it disappear and make sure people could see how John’s childhood was and what it was like for him to live there.”

A Book Party for the Dead

The big names on the invitation for a book party at the St. Regis New York hotel were all dead. Salvador Dalí, Alfred Hitchcock and Diana Vreeland had once lived or lived it up here on East 55th Street, we were told. Had they been among the guests on Wednesday at a party for the release of “It Happened Here” by Lesley M. M. Blume, a book chronicling the St. Regis’s creative history, they would no doubt have reveled again.

The dancers may have been sequestered for dinner (they reappeared later at a dance party), but at least we had Yoko Ono. She’s been dancing since she could walk and did a jig for us to demonstrate. “I’m not a stranger in the dance field,” she said. “The kind of dance that I really do is butoh.” (Reluctant to further reveal our plebeian roots, we decided to go home and look up whatever that was.)

Paul McCartney brings a lifetime of hits to Comerica Park

At age 69, after more than 50 years as a professional musician, it would be understandable if Paul McCartney wanted to kick back, enjoy his engagement to New York businesswoman Nancy Shevell, 51, and count his royalty checks. But always the most energetic of the Beatles, he shows little appetite for the kind of cozy, doze-y retired life he sang about in the Beatles song "When I'm 64" ("we shall scrimp and save" — uh, no need for that, with a fortune estimated to be worth more than $730 million). Now, with just days until his Sunday concert at Comerica Park, McCartney's first performance in the city of Detroit since he was here with Wings in 1976 (his last shows in Metro Detroit were at The Palace in 2005), we catch you up on all things Macca.

Russ Gibb talks about Paul McCartney and the famous ‘Paul is Dead’ rumor

DEARBORN — In a rare interview, Russ Gibb discusses his involvement in the “Paul is Dead” urban legend about singer Paul McCartney of the legendary Beatles.“I want to be begin by saying Paul McCartney is alive and well — I’m sure of that,” said Gibb, a Dearborn resident. In fact, McCartney will be performing Sunday at Comerica Park in Detroit.“I didn’t think anything much about the Beatles except I’d play them on the radio. I liked them a lot, particularly Paul. Interestingly enough, I had met the Beatles when they first came to Detroit (in 1964)... As a DJ, we were all lined up in the office. They were brought in and we each shook hands. That’s about it; we didn’t really talk with them… And they were whisked away to do their show,” recalled Gibb.

An Encounter with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger

The other night I saw The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (The GOASTT) perform at Bowery Ballroom in New York. I enjoyed their set and found that there was no way I wasn’t going to say hello to lead singers Sean Lennon and model Charlotte Kemp Muhl. As you can see from these pictures, both Sean and Charlotte (who are also boyfriend and girlfriend) were extremely cool. I resisted telling Sean that I love his parents because I am sure he is so over hearing that, but I’ll say it here – because it’s true. Also, don’t you love Sean’s Flaming Lips T-shirt ? I do !

Bill Harry celebrates the 50th anniversary of Mersey Beat – the newspaper he created and edited

It was 50 years ago . . . this month. Merseyside’s music-loving teenagers were beginning to move to a new beat – and one man wanted to spread the good news. And so Mersey Beat, Bill Harry’s incredibly-influential publication, was born – ensuring the art college friend of John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe would be at the centre of a musical revolution which later reverberated around the world. Now 72, Bill tells the ECHO from his home in Bayswater, London: “It really doesn’t seem like that long ago, particularly when so many people from all over the world continue to tell me how much they love the Merseyside music of that era.”

John Lennon wrote Imagine on his white Steinway. What would you write on yours ?

Imagine no possessions ? John Lennon wrote the lyrics, but he didn't stick to the idea.
The Beatles star famously ordered a white grand piano from Steinway for his wife's 38th birthday in 1971. Inscribed on it was a simple message, 'For Yoko, Happy Birthday, love John.'To commemorate Lennon's 70th birthday last December, Steinway commissioned 100 replicas of Ono's original, which still stands in her New York flat. The first Imagine Series arrived at Steinway's London showroom last week. 'It's identical to the one Lennon bought for Yoko,' says Steinway's UK managing director, Glen Gough. 'Each will take a year to build and has a decal under the wires, based on a Lennon drawing.' The star's signature has also been laser-engraved next to the keyboard.

It has been both interesting and instructive to watch how popular so-called tribute acts have become in recent years. While there have long been salutes to the Beatles, ever since the success of Beatlemania in the late ’70s, there are now tributes to everybody from Journey to the Doors, Queen to David Bowie, Heart to the Smiths, all playing to enthusiastic crowds (and often at the OC Fair this summer). But “The Greatest Show That Never Was” provided a fascinating boost to the growing parade of musicians emulating famous groups, with Saturday fare at Pacific Amphitheatre featuring a hypothetical bill featuring the Beatles (played by the Fab Four) and the Rolling Stones (courtesy of Jumping Jack Flash).

Odd Molly have for spring / summer of 2012 engaged the American model Charlotte Kemp Muhl. Charlotte is also an actress and singer, and has been with her boyfriend Sean Lennon band The Ghost of A Saber Tooth Tiger .Per Holknekt, Creative Director at Odd Molly says -After a period of collaboration with the great who is also multi-talented Helena Christensen, we at Odd Molly now chosen to work together with Charlotte Kemp Muhl in 2012. She performed live with Sean Lennon at Odd Molly's show at New York Fashion Week last year and now that we were facing our future choice of representative women, she was self-evident. The top model Charlotte is not only breathtaking in its own distinctive appearance, but also genuinely talented in so many wonderful ways. Her performance on the accordion and singing in our display was just enough to make us all just love her. We salute course, women's diversity and multi-properties and therefore we see Charlotte Kemp Muhl as an ideal successor to Helena Christensen. That she then himself is thrilled at Odd Molly clothing does not make things worse. This should be really exciting. I'm really looking forward to shooting in New York on 27 June. The new campaign, styled by Hollywood stylist Jonas Hallberg and plates by Warwick Saint in New York on 27 June.

Beatles photographer Mike Mitchell - exclusive interview airs on May Pang show

New York – Beatles photographer Mike Mitchell gave an exclusive interview yesterday with May Pang on her internet radio show on BlogTalkRadio.com called Dinner Specials with May Pang and Cynthia Neilson. Mitchell, a magazine photographer in 1964, took 46 photos of the Beatles during their first U.S. show, the Washington D.C. concert February 11, 1964, and then at the Baltimore show in September. His photos, never before seen, sold at Christies Auction House on July 20 for over $360,000, a shocking sum that has surprised even Mitchell. The live on-air interview with Pang lasted nearly an hour and illuminated how this all came to pass. Mitchell, who said he knew he’d be a photographer since the age of 13, was present at the Washington D.C. show to take photos of the Beatles, and then again in Baltimore in September. To quote from his story on his website, he describes the challenging conditions: “I had no flash equipment and was therefore forced to take my cues from what the light was doing.”

Yoko Ono Talks Dance Hits, Lady Gaga, John Lennon and Twitter

In December 2010, the last time Yoko Ono was at Billboard, she was being honored for a whopping five consecutive No. 1s on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. With her just-released single "Talking To The Universe" climbing the same chart, the iconoclastic veteran artist took time out to chat about the DJ community's affinity for her music, sharing a stage with Lady Gaga ("one of the most awesome pied pipers the world ever had"), Twitter, and her continuing work protecting and curating her late husband John Lennon's music and legacy. "Talking To The Universe" is vying to be your next hit on Billboard's Dance/Club Play chart. You already have a slew of No. 1s on that chart. Were you surprised when your music was embraced by the DJ community? How has that, in turn, influenced how you make music?

Paul McCartney gets guided museum tour of studio that inspired him.He may be one of the world's most famous musicians, but when Paul McCartney walked through the modest blue front door at the Motown Historical Museum on West Grand Boulevard on Sunday, he was just another excited, awestruck Motown fan."He loved Studio A," reports the museum's chief curator, Lina Stephens. Stephens gave the former Beatle a private tour, along with his band and his fiancee Nancy Shevell, slipping them in at 3 p.m., just before McCartney's 4 p.m. soundcheck at Comerica Park.
