Beck, Lennon & More Sing for Serge Gainsbourg

"How many people here speak French?" asked Sean Lennon of the 10,000 fans attending the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night to celebrate the music of French singer-provocateur Serge Gainsbourg. The occasion marked the twentieth anniversary of his death, as well as the fortieth anniversary of his most revered album, 1971's smoking orchestral-psych masterpiece Histoire de Melody Nelson. A roar of affirmation arose from the crowd and Lennon continued: "Great, can you give me some lessons after the concert? I don't understand what I'm singing." Like many English-speaking musicians, he gushed about adoring the man's music even if he couldn't quite grasp its literal meaning.

Author uncovers John Lennon's letters

More than 250 letters and cards sent by John Lennon to his family and friends are to be published for the first time.Author Hunter Davies, who wrote the only official biography of The Beatles in the 1960s, is trying to track down every missive written by the singer."I've found a lot of letters that nobody's ever seen," he said.Davies, whose book comes out next year, said it was the first time Lennon's widow Yoko Ono had given permission for his private letters to be published. The author said there were "no dramatic revelations" but that the letters gave an insight into Lennon's life and his humour.

This Day in Music Spotlight: The Beatles at Candlestick

Of the 25,000 people in attendance at The Beatles’ 1966 concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, only six knew that this would be the band’s final show: John, Paul, George, Ringo, the band’s road manager, Neil Aspinall, and their assistant road manager, Mal Evans. As far as everyone else was concerned, this was just another stop for the rollercoaster that was Beatlemania.

MsLinds, did you get to see Sean and Char at the Gainsbourg tribute?

I hope you get to see them live!

Also, are you as excited as me about the prospect of reading John Lennon's personal letters?

Tell me, what do you feel about whether Julian is going to release a new video? I have been anxiously waiting but he probably won't, right? I know Lindsey isn't doing one and I guess it's not something people do these days...

A GIANT new artwork depicting each of The Beatles has gone on display at their spiritual home, the Cavern Club It was created by American artist Shannon MacDonald whose work already adorns the Hard Days Night hotel and who has been hailed as “the world’s greatest Beatles artist” by a former Lord Mayor of Liverpool.Shannon travelled from her home in New Jersey to finish off her latest creation, called Toppermost of the Poppermost, and see it put on permanent display at the world-famous Mathew Street venue. The majority of the work was done in the States with the final section of canvas completed in Liverpool by Shannon during the Beatles Convention held over the weekend.

Cirque De Soleil's "Beatles" Throw Out First Pitch At Dodgers Stadium (Video)

Yesterday, if you we're attending the Los Angeles Dodgers/San Diego Padres affair, you had a flashback as the Beatles were in attendance at Dodger Stadium. Okay, it was the Cirque De Soleil's version of the Beatles as the Dodgers continued their celebration of The Beatles famous performance at Dodger Stadium in 1966. The faux Beatles even got to throw out the first pitch of this game and they used a rather team oriented approach.

Remembering when the Beatles came to Bangor

The arrival of arguably the four most famous Scousers in the world would create headlines in Bangor in August 1967.The four Liverpudlians were of course The Beatles, and they were in Bangor to attend a 10 day programme of meditational seminars with Indian guru the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Beatles’ visit to Bangor would turn out to be a key period in their history, with the tragic news the Fab Four would receive while in the city heralding the slow decline of the band and the end of Beatlemania.

I Me Mine: The Beatles and Their Pronouns

James W. Pennebaker’s new book “The Secret Life of Pronouns,” which I reviewed in The Times Book Review on Sunday, makes it hard to stop thinking about pronouns and the other little “function words” that Mr. Pennebaker, a social psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin, sees as “the keys to the soul.” Mr. Pennebaker is admirably omnivorous when it comes to looking for material that will show how these stealthy words — which include articles, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs — reflect our social psyche. One of his more unexpected sources is the lyrical canon of the Beatles.Mr. Pennebaker crunches the numbers on Beatles songs using text analysis programs and arrives at some fascinating conclusions. As the band aged their lyrics grew “more complex, more psychologically distant and far less positive.” The increasing complexity of the lyrics is manifested in “bigger words and more prepositions, articles and conjunctions.” There was also a big drop in the use of first-person singular pronouns, from 14 percent in the group’s early years to 7 percent in the final years. Self-absorption, it seems, gave way to more socially involved perspectives.

Mosaic designed by John Lennon upearthed and recovered : New Photographs
August 25, 2011

Close up photographs of that beautiful mosaic designed by John Lennon that they found and unearthed.I'm very glad it was found and its going to preserved and put on public display.Once its hopefully properly and carefully cleaned.I am looking forward to what its going to look like.A mosaic designed by John Lennon has been recovered, having gone missing after being removed from the musician’s swimming pool. The John Lennon Psychedelic Eye, designed and installed in 1967, featured at the deep end wall of the outdoor swimming pool at Kenwood in St George's Hill, Weybridge, where Lennon lived from 1964 to 1969.In 1985 the owners of Kenwood, a Swedish entrepreneur and his wife, and joint owner of the mosaic, Bernard Cochrane, agreed to preserve the work of art.The 17,000 tiles were painstakingly removed to prevent deterioration and allow it to be displayed for all to enjoy.

The Beatles on the Beach

On Saturday, April 27, 1963, the Beatles played Memorial Hall in Northwich, England the concert poster described them as “Hit recorders of ‘Please, Please Me.’” The next day, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr flew down to Tenerife to unwind with two of their closest Hamburg pals, the graphic artist Klaus Voormann and the photographer Astrid Kirchherr. (John Lennon took his own holiday in Barcelona with the band’s manager, Brian Epstein.) For the upstart combo, it would be their first taste of the jet-set life and, in the saga of their ascent, a momentary breather about halfway up Mount Olympus.

George Harrison's life unfolds in exhibit, film, book

Beginning Oct. 11, the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles will display George Harrison: Living in the Material World, the first major museum retrospective of the late musician's life and career. The exhibit corresponds with two other projects of the same name: a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, which HBO will run in two parts Oct. 5-6, and a book from Harrison's widow, Olivia, out Sept. 27. Harrison also is the subject of a new Rolling Stone cover story.Scorsese and Olivia Harrison uncovered so much during the five-year process of making the documentary that "it seemed a shame not to share that," she says. "There was just too much material that Marty didn't use — ephemera, letters. It lent itself to a pictorial arc of George's life."

When Lenin Met Lennon

The Beatles never set foot in the Soviet Union, and their music was officially banned there throughout their life as a band. But the four lads from Liverpool had an enormous impact on a generation of Soviet youth – turning them into cultural exiles in their own country and fatally weakening the foundation of socialist rule. That's the premise of Leslie Woodhead's documentary How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin, an insightful and nostalgic look at Soviet Beatlemania featuring recollections from Fab Four fans ranging from Russian rock stars to Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov.

Abbey Road: why it's in my blood

These days there is only one album by The Beatles that I can always listen to, and that's Abbey Road. That should come as no surprise to regular readers of Blog on the Tracks; I've mentioned it often. You see, I learned to play the drums to this album. I mean, all right, sure, I had a few lessons at school (intermediate). But my mum suggested that I just play along with records. So when I got my first drum kit it was positioned in the spare room at the end of the house and I went at it. Attempting Come Together and Something and Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Oh! Darling and Octopus's Garden and I Want You (She's So Heavy). It took me a while longer to get my head around side two - but I started out by just playing along to the opening cut, Here Comes the Sun; for the chance to use my brushes.

10 Awesome, Awful & Odd "Hey Jude" Covers

This week in 1968, The Beatles inaugurated their Apple Records label in a most auspicious fashion, releasing "Hey Jude" as a 45. The B-side was "Revolution." Written by Paul McCartney and employing a 36-piece orchestra, "Jude" did nothing to dispel the perception that Paul was the "soft" Beatle and John Lennon the "rock" Beatle. No one - least of all the Apple accountants - seemed to mind, as the song sold 5 million copies by the end of that year, and is now believed to be the group's biggest earner if not their biggest seller. (Inflation, yo.)McCartney ostensibly wrote the song for John's eldest son, Julian, with whom he had always been close.

Yoko Ono continues her domination

Yoko Ono continues her domination as club land’s most unique “dancefloor diva” as she, once again, claims the coveted #1 spot on the BILLBOARD HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY CHART with her fiery summer anthem "TALKING TO THE UNIVERSE" (Issue Date: 09/17/2011). Beating out contemporary pop and electronic music titans like RIHANNA, BRITNEY SPEARS, DEPECHE MODE and DAVID GUETTA, ONO successfully scores her SEVENTH consecutive #1 dance single (and NINTH overall) following “MOVE ON FAST”, “WOULDNIT’ (I’M A STAR)”, “GIVE ME SOMETHING”, “I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH”, “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”, “NO NO NO”, “EVERYMAN / EVERYWOMAN” and the definitive “WALKING ON THIN ICE”.Taken from the 1995 YOKO ONO / IMA collaborative album RISING, the lean, funk-fueled rocker finds ONO tuning in to the universe as our celestial medium and ambassador to the cosmos, urging listeners to purge all the preconceived notions, pretenses and fears that confine us, in order to bask in a freer state of being.

Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band

John Lennon's 1968 drug conviction came back to haunt him in May 1969, when the U.S. authorities refused to grant him a visitor's visa. Regardless, he and Yoko wanted to carry their message of love and peace to the Americans, so they held their second bed-in at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada. Here it was, in Room 1742, that on June 1 they recorded their classic anthem, "Give Peace a Chance," together with the many visitors who were gathered around their bed.A couple of years earlier, John had told the world that no problem was too great because, in the end, "All you need is love." Yet many people still seemed intent on waging war, even if it didn't really get them anywhere. How about trying something else for a change? "All we are saying is give peace a chance," was the simple yet powerful suggestion, and one that filtered through to all corners of the globe.

The Imagine Peace Tower and the Tenth Anniversary of September 11th: The Loudest Shout For Peace Ever

The synergy of two worldwide events: the inauguration of Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower project and the tenth anniversary of September 11th inspired a family to write, compose and record “911 for peace”, a song on World Peace. They are currently seeking charitable peace organizations looking to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their song. Any organization supporting the cause of world peace or related to the events of September 11th can benefit from the donations created by this project, please contact support(at)911totheworld(dot)com today for more details and to register and join in on this effort.

The images of the video will revive the intense feelings sensed by the world 10 years ago.In the spirit of paying tribute to the memory of both the victims of 911 and of John Lennon, a donation will also be made to Yoko Ono’s imagine peace tower project launching on time for John Lennon’s 70th birthday http://imaginepeacetower.com/. This is an exceptional incentive where everyone wins: organizations secure donations for their cause through their members downloading the song; they will give their cause further exposure with little or no effort from their part.

Quiet’ Beatle George Harrison was a red-blooded womaniser who almost split from his wife because of his wayward behaviour

He was affectionately known as ‘the quiet Beatle’.But George Harrison was in fact a womaniser, whose love of the opposite sex almost ruined his 23-year-marriage, a new documentary has revealed. In the upcoming film, directed by Martin Scorcese, former bandmate Paul McCartney claims the guitarist ‘liked the things that men like. He was red-blooded.’ Harrison’s widow, Olivia, admitted she often struggled with her wayward husband’s behaviour. She claims that although she and Harrison ‘seemed like partners from the very beginning’ their marriage survived a series of ‘hiccups’.‘He did like women and women did like him,’ she says. ‘If he just said a couple of words to you it would have a profound effect. So it was hard to deal with someone who was so well loved.’ Miss Harrison worked alongside Scorcese to produce private letters, journals and unseen footage of the star for the film George Harrison: Living in a Material World, which has been made to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the star’s death. He died in November 2001, aged 58, following a long-battle with cancer. It also features personal recollections from friends including Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton.Harrison earned a reputation as the most reserved character out of the Beatles, in contrast to John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr who were the more outspoken members of the Fab Four.

She added: ‘You go through challenges in your marriage and here is what I found: the first time we had a big hiccup in the road, we came through things, and then you go, ‘Wow!’ There is a reward at the end of it.’‘There is this incredible reward because you have lived through more and you have let go of something.’By the end, when her husband was ill, she admits she was glad that they had ‘worked this through together. Through all these things that came between us.’She also reveals Harrison’s fury at John Lennon’s murder in 1980 by Mark Chapman. ‘He was angry John did not have a chance to leave his body in a better way,’ she said

MsLinds, you see now they've come out with a film that depicts George as a human being- not a saint or a bad man- but a human who made some mistakes. So now a lot of the George fans are going mad with anger over "character assassination" and I'm just side-eyeing it all. I knew all this stuff already, as I was also a George stan at one point.

I would also appreciate it if one day people could see that all of them were normal blokes who broke hearts and weren't perfectly nice all the time and BACK OFF OF JOHN as the monster. Each of of them was capable of being a jerk to the utmost degree, and that's my point. We don't have to love them all equally, shoot we don't even have to love them all, but recognize that the four of them together were responsible for some of the greatest music this world has ever experienced, and they didn't owe any of us anything more than what they gave us. Judgmental people to the left.

Anyway, I appreciate all your posts always. As you know, the John news gives me the most joy but I was a George girl at one point and news on him always matters to me.

Thanks MsLinds!!!
