John Lennon Tribute Concert CD Out in November

Patti Smith, Jackson Browne, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bettye LaVette and Aimee Mann are among the artists featured on "The 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute, Live From the Beacon Theatre NYC," which is due out Nov. 15. Proceeds from the 15-track digital album will benefit the Japanese Red Cross' earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.

The performances of Beatles and Lennon solo songs were recorded during the 30th annual Lennon tribute show, which took place Nov. 12, 2010. Browne performed "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" while Smith and guitarist Tony Shanahan played "Oh Yoko," Ndegeocello sang "God," Aimee Mann took on "Jealous Guy," and LaVette delivered "The Word," which she covered on her Grammy Award-nominated 2010 release "Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook." Taj Mahal, Shelby Lynne, Joan Osborne, Alejandro Escovedo, Keb' Mo', Martin Sexton and the Playing For Change Band are also featured on the album.

Still Picking Up Good Vibrations

For the past 44 years, the Beach Boys' "Smile" has been rock's most notorious phantom album. Intended as a follow-up to the band's "Pet Sounds," the project sent Brian Wilson—the group's leader and mastermind of "Smile"—into an emotional tailspin, and led the band to infighting over the material. In May 1967, after eight grueling months of recording, Capitol Records scrapped the record. Though many of the 19 tracks meant for "Smile" were later modified and added onto subsequent Beach Boys albums, the original tapes and outtakes remained in a vault—all too painful for Mr. Wilson to revisit.

Memorial Concert To Honor George Harrison

A sign that reads, "Still pissed at Yoko" is a one of the many nostalgic Beatles memorabilia that adorns the office of Steven Schenkel, music professor at Webster University. Schenkel was a diehard Beatles fan long before he became an expert at performing or teaching jazz guitar.Schenkel's lifelong love of the Beatles has prompted his latest endeavor - paying homage to George Harrison with a memorial concert titled, "All Things Must Pass: Jazz Interpretations of the Music of George Harrison." The concert, set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10 in the Winifred Moore Auditorium at Webster University, will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the late Beatle's death.

Part 2 of Living In the Material World Emphasizes George's 'Inner Life!'

Isn't it a pity, Isn't it a shame. How we break each other's hearts, and cause each other pain. How we take each other's love, Without thinking anymore. Forgetting to give back. Isn't it a pity? George HarrisonPart 2 of Living in the Material World has a much lower key of feeling to it than Part 1, which is in harmony with the texture of the second half of George's life. Still exciting though; it's nice to see Monty Python again, and there's the Traveling Wilburys, the sprawling Victorian mansion of Sir Frankie Crisp, and many insightful reflections of Harrison's life from his widow, Olivia.

A BBC poll in 2002 ranked Lennon number eight in a poll of the 100 Greatest Britons; McCartney and George Harrison were not even in the top twenty, and Ringo Starr was not on the list.

I sort of feel that Paul's wedding is inconsequential because of the DAY it was.

It's all about John (and Sean, Giles, me) on that day...

Also, MsLinds, I got an email saying they shipped out the Julian album and I'll be getting it VERY soon! Woopee!!!

Julian Lennon -Everything Changes
Back in the studio after a lengthy sabbatical

It’s not easy being the musician son of one of the most famous musicians in the world, so it’s understandable that Julian Lennon should also explore other avenues to occupy his time. In recent years, he’s been making a name for himself as a photographer, working extensively with U2 and – less obviously – as an official snapper at the wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco. Now, however, he’s returning to his first love – 13 years after his previous album – no doubt once again bracing himself for the unavoidable comparisons to dad. But while, like half-brother Sean on his 2006 album Friendly Fire, the genetic lineage is clearly detectable, Everything Changes offers enough of Julian as his own man to be judged on its own merits; having said that, the melodic piano balladry of Lookin’ 4 Luv owes a tangible debt to his honorary uncle Paul.

Troubled Fantasy: Creepy Wax Figures Of John Lennon

It's a big week for Beatles fans, which is like saying it's a big week for people who like air and water. Yesterday was John Lennon's 71st birthday, and tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of "Imagine." The Martin Scorsese-directed doc on George Harrison's life, the beyond stellar George Harrison: Living in the Material World, premiered last week on HBO. Not to be outdone, Paul McCartney married for the third time, tying the knot with his girlfriend Nancy Shevell.Lennon's legacy is obviously massive and influential, and his message lives on now, almost 31 years since his murder in 1980. But aside from all that, aside from the rightful adoration and worship - though Harrison became our favorite Beatle this week - is the inherent creepiness of most every wax figure made of Lennon.

Art History Grad Student Explores Feminism in Art

While Emily Heap, a graduate student in art history at American University, acknowledges that someone can enjoy viewing of piece of art in a museum, she feels it’s much more fulfilling to learn the history behind it. “When you study art history, you build complicated arguments that challenge not only how other people think, but how you think as well,” she says.

Heap’s interest in feminist art history was first piqued during an undergrad course at DePaul University, where she read works by feminist art history pioneers and American University emeritae professors Mary Garrard and Norma Broude. “I could see myself in the work for the first time,” Heap says of their writings. “Art history can be used as a tool to change things and clarify perceptions. For me, feminism is an amazing tool to present myself not only as a woman, but as someone who is interested in exploring concepts that have been normalized and institutionalized.”

When she was introduced to Yoko Ono’s art in professor Namiko Kunimoto’s Gender and Sexuality in East Asian Art course, Heap immediately felt a connection. When she was introduced to Yoko Ono’s art in professor Namiko Kunimoto’s Gender and Sexuality in East Asian Art course, Heap immediately felt a connection. Heap was especially touched by Ono’s “Half-a-Room,” a mock studio apartment in which everything—from the teapot to the armchair—is cut in half. The work was inspired by Ono’s relationship with husband, John Lennon. “She could never get past John Lennon,” she explains. “But what came through as I reviewed her provocative, funny, and dangerous work is that she never asked to be released from that association.”

Johnny Depp role in Beatles film ?

Johnny Depp is unlikely to take the lead role in The Longest Cocktail Party, the film about the founding of the Beatles' record company Apple Records, but there could be another part for the A-lister.Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, who is backing the movie, had wanted the Pirates Of The Caribbean star to play publicist Derek Taylor in the forthcoming big-screen adaptation of Richard DiLello's book, but producer Andrew Eaton had his doubts.
