Bidding-War for Rare Beatles Album

A bidding-war is heating up for this scarce fully-signed Beatles album being offered on eBay, with bids pushing past $12,000 in just the first few days of the (ten-day) auction, for good reason. The Record, Please Please Me, is described by the seller as the "album that launched it all," signed by each member in the group (George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon) in May of 1963.The full-round of signatures and early-date make the album particularly scarce and highly-sought by serious collectors.

McGear on Macca

The black SUV pulled up at 11 a.m. and a man with a shock of white hair hopped out from the driver's side. Sporting a trendy herringbone coat, a long gray scarf, tight black jeans and sharp black-leather slip-ons, Mike McCartney looked remarkably like his brother, Paul—but with more angular features. For years Mike, 68, has avoided any appearance of capitalizing on the fame of "Our Kid" (as he refers to his older sibling). When Paul left Liverpool in the mid-1960s, Mike remained—taking on a pseudonym and performing as a pop-poet and singer. He appeared in the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" video, and he's Brother Michael in Paul's "Let 'Em In." Now Mr. McCartney is enjoying a fresh round of fame.

An incredible exhibit of a record collector's stash of vinyl albums from around the world with signatures of the four Beatles, plus an autographed guitar, is now on display in Norway."Get Back – Signed The Beatles,", which runs through May 31, features an amazing collection of authentic Beatles autographs collected on both British and American vinyl LP covers. MUSIC DEBATE: Is Liverpool trapped in Beatlemania ?
Don’t underestimate the influence of the 1960s, says Tim Dalton, senior lecturer in popular music at Liverpool John Moores University

AS A resident of south Liverpool I am only too aware of the draw that this city exerts over the rest of the world when it comes to popular music heritage. The childhood homes of Paul McCartney at 20 Forthlin Road and John Lennon at 251 Menlove Avenue still entice a large number of international and domestic tourists. With the inclusion of Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Woolton’s St Peter’s Parish church, Pier Head and* various other sites around Liverpool you start to think that the whole cultural industry in Merseyside is there to perpetuate the myth and legend of The Beatles.

Day in the life of fifth Beatle

PAUL McCartney belting out a rock n’ roll standard leans into John Lennon, who grins manically.George Harrison strikes a buoyant stage pose with arms outstretched and Roy Young is clearly having the time of his life on the piano. The black and white photograph, inset, shows The Beatles – fronted by John, Paul, George and Roy – when they were really a hot live act. That’s right Roy not Ringo – Roy Young from Oxford.

Deconstructing the Beatles: Scott Freiman on how "A Day in the Life" is like Frankenstein

Besides blowing the mind of everyone who ever heard it, Sgt. Pepper broke a lot of ground: The album radically expanded the concept of what pop music could be, in the process inventing the studio technology needed to make it happen. There's probably not another person alive who can articulate what that process meant -- and means today -- better than Scott Freiman, a composer and recording engineer who moonlights as a Beatles lecturer. In advance of his two Deconstructing the Beatles presentations at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax tonight and tomorrow, we caught up with Freiman to talk about history, studio tricks and how he got into this line of work in the first place.

No song in The Beatles' catalog features as many literary and social references in its lyrics as "I Am the Walrus."In writing it, John Lennon drew inspiration from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (the walrus), a playground nursery rhyme that he and his pals sang as children (the line beginning with "yellow matter custard") and the traditional song "Marching to Pretoria" (whose lyric "I'm with you and you're with me and we are all together" Lennon mimics in the opening lines).

Norway Beatles exhibition possible fake

The “Get Back” Beatles exhibition at Trondheim’s Rockheim rock and pop museum featuring items involving Statoil is counterfeit, leading memorabilia experts claim.German-born Bavarian Beatles web-shop owner Frank Seltier, who has been working with Beatles memorabilia for 25 years, alleges most of the autographs on several album covers and guitars and framed photographs are “extremely bad forgeries.”“The letters are completely different to how they should be. Some of the albums from the '60s are signed with a felt-tipped pen. I’ve never seen signatures by The Beatles from that period using this,” Mr Seltier, reportedly acknowledged as one of Europe’s foremost experts, says to Adresseavisen.

Our brief overview of the Beatles breakup Tuesday had a lot of reaction, but one comment came from someone who remembered it very well. Through interviews at the time, Connolly saw the Beatles' breakup from the inside.

Why John Lennon still rocks

I'm a huge Cirque du Soleil fan. I've probably seen every show they've done, and can even pronounce the French name correctly. The best show, in my learned opinion, is Love. A tribute to the Beatles, at the Mirage, is so magical I would swear they're hypnotizing us with their sequined outfits. *I'm a huge Beatles fan, so it's an easy sell for me, but before the show I just loved them. Now I loooove them! It's a very specific technical difference.

John Lennon's 'Imagine' art contest theme

Imagining a life of peace, a place without greed or hunger and with nothing to kill or die for was the legacy of John Lennon. It is also the theme that captured the imaginations of inmates at the Central East Correctional Centre. The fourth annual art contest at the centre received 64 entries from 35 artists from the male and female inmate population. The song was selected by a staff committee out of 100 submitted song titles."It was difficult for the judges," said Grace King, the provincial centre's volunteer coordinator. "There was lots of great art, lots of reflective pieces."The criteria for receiving a prize or honourable mention "was the best interpretation of the song, the anarchy, the ying and yang of the song," said King, who created the contest.

All Together Now: Civil Rights and The Beatles’ First American Tour

“We will not appear unless Negroes are allowed to sit anywhere,” The Beatles said in a press statement on September 6, 1964. Halfway through a 23-city U.S. tour, the group was looking ahead to their date at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, where they’d heard that blacks were confined to the balconies or upper tiers at public events such as concerts.

Steve Jobs In Unheard Interview: 'My Model Of Management Is The Beatles'

My model of management is the Beatles. The reason I say that is because each of the key people in the Beatles kept the others from going off in the directions of their bad tendencies. They sort of kept each other in check. And then when they split up, they never did anything as good.

Paul McCartney's set list in Paraguay keeps changes to minimum (set list, video)

The changes were few Tuesday night as Paul McCartney performed at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción, Paraguay. As has been his habit on the tour, he's been shuffling a few songs around each night, beginning with the opener. In this case, it was "Magical Mystery Tour" that began this show instead of "Hello, Goodbye" which kicked off the show in Uruguay two days ago.

Top 5 Celebrity Sightings at the NY Book Fair

2. Yoko Ono
Yoko Ono’s presence on Saturday truly set the fair abuzz with excitement (after all, it’s Yoko). She certainly could not be missed with dark sunglasses only partially obscuring her iconic face and a straw hat fashionably askew on her head. Ms. Ono spent quite a bit of time at the fair, even stopping in Butterfield’s cafe for a little rest, and it appeared that she left the fair happily– her companion’s arms were filled with purchases. Ms. Ono is a fan of art and artists’ books.

Bid-War for Beatles Album Ends at $24k

A fierce ten-day bidding war has ended with this scarce Beatles album fetching $24,675 on eBay. Surprisingly, the album was not a hit when it was first released in America. The Record, Please Please Me, was described by the seller as the "album that launched it all," signed by each member in the group (George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon) in May of 1963.The full-round of signatures and early-date make the album particularly scarce and highly-sought by serious collectors.
