Six Pack: The best of Fleetwood Mac

After a week off to write about grilling, and getting grilled about it from roasting vegetables to Six Pack's love of cheap hot dogs (if they are grilled), Six Pack will return to music this week, promising not to stray for at least two weeks.

This week, the 1970's most dysfunctional band, Fleetwood Mac, is highlighted. Dysfunctional might just be an understatement.

Before the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1975, Fleetwood Mac was a blues-based band with Peter Green and Bob Welch as the primary writers and guitarists. Green left in 1971, and Welch hit the door in 1974. Enter Buckingham, who wouldn't join the group unless Nicks, his girlfriend, got a job with the group.

The group had a married couple already, bassist John McVie and keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie, but they would divorce after the group's best-selling album was released in 1977.

Only drummer and group namesake Mick Fleetwood escaped the affairs of the heart, and that might only be partially true. Rumor has a connection between Fleetwood and Nicks after Nicks and Buckingham were no more.

Like sands through the hourglass ...

Six Pack is happy there was discontent in the ranks or there might not have been so much good music to pick from.

Near misses - "Silver Springs," "Dreams," "You Make Loving Fun," "Say You Love Me."

6. "Hold Me" Released in 1982, this song was all over popular radio at the time. Although it never climbed above No. 4. It was there for seven weeks, but not received well in England, home of Fleetwood and both McVies. Written and sang by Christie McVie, it is the most pure pop song of the group, but its hook just cannot be ignored.

5. "Tusk" Give them credit for not following 1977's "Rumours" with an imitation. The title track from the 1979 album is like nothing else from Fleetwood Mac. Marching bands, inaudible lyrics and unknown meaning — it has it all. Six Pack wasn't going to include it in the Top Six, but it is truly a creative work, so it can't be left off.

4. "The Chain" The only song on "Rumours" to be credited to all five members, "The Chain" is a concert opener for the group, notably on the 1997 reunion album "The Dance." It tells of the resilience of the band through all of years of turmoil and strife. "The Chain" didn't chart well in the U.S. or England, proving once again Six Pack digs deep when supplying his readers the lists.

3. "Landslide" Smashing Pumpkins and the Dixie Chicks each had chart success covering this song but neither version can hold a candle to this version on 1975's self-titled "Fleetwood Mac" album. Penned by Nicks, who was having trouble in the relationship with Buckingham, this tune and "Rhiannon" were Nicks' first contribution to the band. Turns out, she was a keeper, even if Buckingham didn't think so.

2. "Everywhere" A later hit from 1987's "Tango in the Night," this is Christie McVie's finest work. Her smooth vocals are the antithesis to Nicks sound of singing into a fan on many occasions, but somehow, the group made it work. It hit No. 14 on the Billboard charts, but went all the way to No. 1 in Belgium, proving the Belgians don't waffle around when it comes to good music.

1. "Go Your Own Way" Buckingham's turn to write about the tumultuous relationship with Nicks turned out to be one of the most rocking Fleetwood Mac songs. (The B-side to the single is "Silver Springs," thought as Stevie's response.) Six Pack is a sucker for sizzling guitar and this is Buckingham's time to shine with the axe. It is the ultimate breakup song, and who doesn't like a good breakup song?
