Question about the song "Black Magic Woman"
Hi, uhm, I was wondering about "Black Magic Woman" - I saw a fairly old video clip of Carlos Santana performing this today - Wasn't this originally a Fleetwood Mac song? Who wrote it, Peter Green?

Yes, it was written by Peter Green, but Carlos recorded his version (1969) within a year of Fleetwood Mac's original being recorded (1968).

FM and Santana
In their early tours of the USA while in San francisco, The band members of FM stayed at Santanas drummers house and played together along with other area musicians. They did not have a lot of gigs back then and living on the cheap in the post hippie city. There Carlos Santana learned the song and cross polinated with the Brits. FM started using different drum patterns and driftred towards the new idea "Jam Band" Carlos Santana was already a devotee of Michael Bloomfield and was immediatly taken with the sublime Peter. These days Carlos has a loftier self appraisal of the meeting and is backed up by his good fortune and fame.
I personally think that Peter was the head of the class with Michael Bloomfield. Carlos's star was to rise later and explode at woodstock the summer of 69. these are personal oppinions as an avid listener in those days doodyhead |
