Default Death Cab For Cutie

I recently decided that this band is really good and wondered if anyone
hears some Lindsey influence on the track "Soul Meets Body".

It almost has a Big Love (circa 1987) sound if you really listen.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Death Cab For Cutie. They're like one of my all time favorites.

As for Soul Meets Body sounding like Big Love...Maybe. A little bit. Big Love may be a little faster. In any case, I like Soul Meets Body more.

yeah -
they certainly are a band to watch. i've never seen them but hear they are pretty spectacular live.
they've gotten a lot of attention here in LA on KCRW the past few years but for some reason they never really got my attention until the 6 Feet Under soundtrack. Now I find them slowly but surely getting under my skin.

This particular track almost has an 80's New Order sound - but when I first heard it while driving at night, I immediately was reminded of how I reacted when I first heard Big Love on the radio - the first day it was released.

A critic commented recently that their career seems to be very similar to R.E.M's - in that each new album is bettter than the last. (at least early R.E.M.)

I don't own any of their albums, but I have seen them live twice, and while they were solid both times, they never blew me away. I didn't stick around for their set at Lollapalooza this year, though, which I heard was very good.

They're gonna be paying karmic debts to the producers of The O.C. for decades...

I haven't heard that song, but they have covered Go Your Own Way live with The Decemberists.

They actually cite FM as one of their influences a lot. Specifically Rumours. I've read quotes from them talking about how they've used it as a model with some of their work.

I love Soul Meets Body. I think I listened to it on repeat for practically an entire day when I first got Plans.

I found the URL to it thanks to google...
GYOW

Ben Gibbard sounds good on it, but the Decemberists guy is very...er...not good. The really butchered the first chorus. But its cool hearing Death Cab do FM.

oddly today,

I just realized how Mick Fleetwoodesque the drums are on much of the album - but especially Soul Meets Body. I had no idea they were heavily influenced by the band and Rumours but it makes sense now. The Fleetwood Mac influence I hear is more of the Mirage/Tango era. And aside from that I hear Flaming Lips influences every now and then.

and no - I don't think this should be in "chit chat".

we're having a conversation about music and Fleetwood Mac.
So here this thread shall stay.

Which is why I hate The Decemberists. Ben Gibbard always sounds good tho, on everything he does.

I dug up this thread because I'm a new convert
That's good though, means they're getting international recognition.

I vaguely remember someone posting about this before
anyway, the song Summer Skin --> Second Hand News? Anyone else hear it?

it was that 'tall grass' line that got me thinking in that direction, but the drums are similar too.

I'm seeing them tonight! Woohoo! That's cool they're getting international recognition... I remember when they were a little local band. Check out their previous album Transatlanticism... it's also very good.

When they say it "influenced" them, what precisely do they mean? To what does that influence specifically refer? Were they influenced by the lyrics? the engineering? the arrangements? the hillbilly mountain music motifs? the pomo-blues-hippies-transplanted-into-the-Hotel-California-Hell aspect?

Thanks for the tip, I will, and again, have fun tonight!

Yeah, my fave radiostation is playing them almost every hour. I hope they'll do well enough here to come over for a concert, hehe!
