Default In Your Dreams acetate test pressing: songs sequenced differently

Today I won an auction for an early acetate test pressing of In Your Dreams. The songs are sequenced differently than the retail release.

Acetate track-list:

01. Moonlight
02. For What It's Worth
03. In Your Dreams
04. New Orleans
05. Ghosts Are Gone
06. Secret Love
07. Everybody Loves You
08. Wide Saragasso Sea
09. Solder's Angel
10. Annabel Lee
11. You May Be The One
12. Italian Summer
13. Cheaper Than Free

Indian Summer?

That actually looks interesting. I'm gonna make a playlist in that order and see hwo it sounds... I think I might like that better to be honest. I like Moonlight opening - I love Stevie's long epics as openers, kind of embodying the theme of the album...

I'm going to have to try this sequencing and see what I think! Perhaps it'll finally make sense of why Secret Love abruptly cuts off, yet doesn't segway into another song.

It makes sense that it cuts off because of how the song is structured. The same "flare" sound happens during the bridge, and then the song ends with it.

I could never ax Secret Love or Cheaper Than Free (they are good songs ) but then again I know how you feel about long albums I think they axed the right song with "My Heart" and making it THE exclusive bonus track - though I do not like it sequenced in the middle of the record after Annabel Lee. I resequenced it on my Ipod at the end, because it's the one and only song I skip on the entire record.

Thanks, GoldDustOrphan, for sharing the info about this! Like most of you, I have also played around with the track order. I also think I like the acetate order better than the released one.... BUT, I still would make one change and switch "Wide Sargasso Sea" & "Everybody Loves You".

I LOVE having WSS follow "Secret Love"... particularly with the ending of "Secret Love". For me, it works PERFECTLY! The only trouble with this is ELY doesn't sound that great immediately following WSS... but if there is a little track silence between them, it works alright.

(I think someone else on here made a similar analogy once, so I cannot take full credit!)
agreed. it took me a couple of listens to "get" Cheaper Than Free, but once I got an emotion in me from the song, I loved it.

I keep trying to make My Heart 2011 happen and it's hard. TISL My Heart is so much better.

The alternate track listing is interesting. It's always tough to get the right flow. But I think most of Stevie's albums are sequenced pretty well.

If I were producer, I would have kept My Heart in the standard edition and grouped the songs by the following themes:

Strong, catchy, and whimsical Stevie songs up front...

01. Secret Love
02. In Your Dreams
03. Wide Sargasso Sea
04. Moonlight
05. Annabel Lee
06. My Heart

Deeper, more literal stuff up next...

07. Everybody Loves You
08. Ghosts Are Gone
09. Solder's Angel
10. You May Be The One
11. For What It's Worth

Empowering travelogue songs...

12. New Orleans
13. Italian Summer

Heartfelt ballad closer (and it kind feels like the last call song anyway)...

14. Cheaper Than Free

"Indian Summer" is an error on my part. I was typing too fast. Funny thing is that I'm Italian.

Acetates and Test Pressings are the prototypes and test models of a recording. Before a record/CD is mass produced, it is tested to see if it meets both artistic and technical approval.

Someone posted the tracks from an acetate of Trouble in Shangri-La, which had three songs that were eventually cut from the tracklist. It's where the original "My Heart" originated from.

This probably explains where the initial report that Moonlight was track 1 came from.

Before I even made a new play list in this order, I looked at it and thought, this is so much better. I know I’m one of the few that haven’t been wetting my pants over the CD. I’ve been having a hard time with the later half, everything from Soldier’s Angel onward, but this new order is MUCH better. My two favorites are Secret Love and For What It’s Worth but I didn’t think they went that good together back to back. The songs are showcased better on the acetates pressing. Also, another thing that was bothering me was the fact that there were 8 songs back to back that run over 5 minutes long, which I think is too much. So again, love this new order. Yes, I’m rambling.

Agreed. I just did a little test listen with this track order, and I think it's epic. I wonder why in the world it was changed? The songs flow much better and compliment each other so much better in this sequence!

well we all have heard Stevie rave on and on in interviews about how she's so great at sequencing albums, even saying she sequenced Rumors.....looks like she may be losing her touch?
