Elton John always loved Soul, Blues and R&B, during his shows he always used to perform old songs like "I heard it through the grapevine" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Io-9rPNiM)

Also I think Peter and Danny's guitar sounds closely resemble the sound of the cello, especialy on this (not the classic riff bit , but the" doo dee- dee doo -doodee phrase bit ! )despite being prodiced by over driven valve amps!

I'm not sure of what you mean with " doo dee- dee doo -doodee" but I intended it with 0:28-o:43 segment.
I found very interesting this take because it represented very well the original version from the 2:15 mark.

Yep I mean the 0.28 to 0.40 section -the very" bright " cello(s)¬sound (s) almost like an overdriven electric guitar to me .
