True, but he never managed to put in the suspense Peter added. I do like the commitment and power he showed in playing the song, however.

Compared to Green's version, Welch did his best, Judas Priest simply butcher the song. At least Welch is playing it as an homage. Priest riff it up to a metal power chord-fest that removes any darkness, and despair from the original recording. Yet you can hear Green's "Manalishi" in other British metal bands from that period such as Iron Maiden. I hear it in Brian May with Queen. Many don't realize how that song was a real game changer, to those who were listening. I'm sure that was not Peter Green's original plan, but he has a claim in late 70's/early 80's British heavy metal.

Back on topic, my favorite pre '75 song? "Albert Ross". After that it could be "Rollin' Man", "Sunny Side of Heaven", "Oh Well", "Before the Beginning", "Without You", "Merry-Go Round", "Love That Burns", and "Sentimental Lady".

I don't much care for Station Man either.

Oh, I totally forgot Albatross before too. That comes before Man of the World. Whenever I hear Albatross I go in my head to being on a beautiful small boat, floating down a calm river...basking in the warm sun...*daydreaming*

Does anyone notice The Beatles song Sun King is based on Albatross?

George Harrison is quoted in print confirming this fact. Despite what era of FM you consider your favorite, the Beatles were very fond of the original band.

For "Albatross", Green said his inspiration was Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk", a late 50's instrumental. Thanks to the movie "La Bamba", every time I hear "Sleepwalk", I think of that scene in the movie when Ritchie Valens' family heard over the radio that he had been killed. Ever since, I've always felt an eerie vibe with that song.

Favorite Pre-75 song:

"Why"

or

"Woman of a 1000 Years"

or

"Dust"

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.
