Pious Bird of Good Omen
My question to all of you is: What do you think of this album? Good? Bad? Indifferent?
I personally enjoy it. It sounds great, even though there is a lot of Eddie Boyd there and not enough Peter or Jeremy or Danny. It's sounds sort of like a precursor to "Blues Jam at Chess". Thoughts?

Just The Blues with Eddie Boyd is one of my alltime favourite Mac related tunes. Superb.
The rest of the album is pretty damn good. The only track i'm not fond of is Rambling Pony. A good little compilation album. |

I liked the album when I first got it, since it filled in the gaps with the singles that came out subsequent to Mr. Wonderful. Although, I do prefer the US release English Rose...since it contained songs that were originally slated for (and actually ON the early pressings of) Then Play On ("One Sunny Day", "Without You", "Something Inside Of Me"), and included the singles ("Black Magic Woman", "Jigsaw Puzzle Blues", "Albatross")...the only one that is blatantly missing from this set is "Need Your Love So Bad".

I have Blues Jam at Chess on vinyl, but I haven't given it a spin yet. How would Blues Jam be described?

Ok, thats not really helpful is it? Its pretty much about the equivalent of the two Eddie Boyd albums or the Otis Spann one if you have heard them, if not, then its the album you listen to for Peter's guitar playing and not much else. Last edited by chriskisn; 10-08-2009 at 05:13 AM.. |

The deal of a lifetime is the Complete Blue Horizon Recordings, which includes all of their work before Then Play On. The liner notes are good, the packaging is great, and Vernon includes all sorts of alternate takes and demos...

"Blues Jam in Chicago" is really a Jeremy Spencer triumph, he truly shines on both volumes. I like Green's slower "Watch Out", and "Homework". He really had Otis Rush down. Kirwan's "Like It This Way" is also featured. |

In writing my post I was sitting at work and thinking about the early Mac. Whenever I think of "Pious" I think of Eddie Boyd. It's just what first comes to mind for me. You are 100% correct of course that Eddie is only on 2 tracks. My mistake, I deserve whatever slings and arrows should be pitched my way.

Hello SteveMacD & all: I like your edited track list. It's a very representative collection for Peter. I also agree with the earlier recommendation of the Blue Horizon box set. Just what the doctor ordered for the FM blues fans. Best wishes, Madelow.
