Hmm, I don't know if this could be categorized as "off beat" but I'd have to say Soul Coughing. It's the kind of band that you have to listen to a few times before you get it. I have albums from them that I've heard a thousand times ver and can still hear new elements. Played them for a number of friend and only one...ONE... liked them. Anyone know their stuff?

I know, I shouldn't just post to laugh, but I had to.

But that brings up an interesting question. Today I am listening to an online African radio station. To me it is offbeat, but in Africa I doubt it would be, and in fact it seems to run along the lines of African music I've heard before as far as the sounds and rhythms.

But of course. Whether or not something is "off-beat" depends on what you're defining as your "beat."

There's so much cool music coming out of various parts of Africa these days. Way to go, Africans.

I wonder if there is some African muso sitting around laughing at this, thinking "the only thing they play on those stations is top 40!

i was wondering how one would define offbeat, too. everything i listen to other than fleetwood mac is alternative, indie, mostly, but not all, canadian. does that make it offbeat? not to me... but maybe to others?

current obsessions (though i have musical ADHD. give me a week or so, they'll all be different)
