Default New Jeremy Spencer project

Jeremy Spencer has been working in a trio called Steetley, and they've released an album called The Momen She Fell. It's available as download from iTunes and Amazon.

It's sort of pop/Celtic in style...

From what I can figure out Jeremy sings three of the tracks: "Sonali", "Matchstick Girl" and "Sunshine Through The Rain".

Enjoy!

The Fleetwood Mac star and the village people

It’s a most unlikely partnership. He is a former superstar rock musician and founder member of Fleetwood Mac; they are an unassuming musical couple who live in a Ribble Valley village.

Yet this trio of two 30-somethings and a famous senior citizen have worked together on an album of songs that combine their mix of talents.

It was by sheer coincidence that music maker Andy Oliver (35), of Ribble Lane, Chatburn, struck up a friendship with Jeremy Spencer, the brilliant blues guitarist who sensationally quit the successful rock band to join a religious sect in the United States.

On a visit to his home town Hartlepool, Andy was chatting with his mum’s neighbour, Valerie Yuill. She had once lived next door to Jeremy Spencer, who was also born in Hartlepool.

Andy contacted the musician, who is now aged 65 and lives near Dublin, and they chatted and exchanged emails about their home town, their music, their favourite films and life in general.

They began to swop music and lyrics and put some songs together, and Andy’s Irish-born wife Janet Bamford – a former junior tin whistle champion – added backing vocals and other instruments.

The result is a 14-track album by their trio, named Steetley after a magnesia factory in Hartlepool.

Its title “The Moment She Fell” was inspired by the factory’s 230-foot landmark chimney, demolished last year. The album was given a “soft release” this week on Amazon and iTunes, and a CD will follow in the New Year.

“The band did come about in a rather strange manner, but it works” said Andy.

“Jeremy offered me support and advice, and I sent him one of my tracks that he then produced and sent back to me, and it blew me away.”

The musical collaboration came to a head when Jeremy visited Andy and Janet in October to look around the Ribble Valley, make a sentimental journey back to Hartlepool, and record material with the couple.

Andy said: “It was a very emotional trip to Hartlepool. Jeremy’s mother and father had been laid to rest there. It was a very moving experience.”

Andy said he was not overawed at working with such a famous musician. “When I first got in touch with him, I’d no intention of asking him to make music with me. We just became pals and the music developed from there.

“We’re very pleased with the album. It’s a mix of folk/rock, rich in storytelling, with Jeremy’s slide guitar and etherial tin whistle from Janet.”

Hartlepool musician releases album with Fleetwood Mac guitarist

IT started out with a conversation with a neighbour, then a chance email and now a Hartlepool-born musician has released an album with a rock legend.

And for singer songwriter Andy Oliver it’s been a surreal – yet incredible – experience.

The 35-year-old has had relative success on iTunes as he’s released his own material over the past five years.

But now he’s armed with a new band and his new partner in crime is non-other than original Fleetwood Mac guitarist, Jeremy Spencer.

The collective is Hartlepool through-and-through as Andy was born in the town, as was Jeremy, and the band is named Steetley.

And after releasing their first album together on iTunes, Andy hasn’t ruled out live dates at some point in the future.

For now though, he’s still enjoying learning everything he can from a man whose name sits alongside legends of the music world in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And for Andy, it all started out with that chance conversation with Val Yuill, a neighbour of his parents Ann, 59, and Mike, 60, in Hart Village.

“I had been visiting my parents and as I walked outside Val came up and got chatting to me and said how she must be destined to live near musicians,” explained Andy, a former English Martyrs RC School and Sixth Form College student.

“I asked how and she explained how she used to live near Jeremy Spencer. At that point I didn’t even realise Jeremy was from Hartlepool.”

Andy decided to send Jeremy a chance email after his conversation with Val, although he admitted he didn’t expect a reply.

But Jeremy did reply and the pair got chatting about their upbringing and the conversation ultimately led to music.

After many months of emails sent back and forth, Jeremy then started sending Andy tracks to put lyrics to.

And before they knew it, the pair had an album’s worth of material together.

Jeremy, now 65, even made the trip back to town for the first time since he left when he was 10 and visited the street where he was born, St Paul’s Road, and the former Steetley site, which Andy wrote one of the songs about, thus leading to the naming of the band.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Jeremy,” said Andy, who regularly makes the trip back to town despite now living in Clitheroe, in Lancashire with his wife Janet Bamford, 42, also in the band.

“He’s been making music all of his life and everything he does is just absolute class.

“It’s a funny industry because there is so much shifting about with people trying to find their place but Jeremy has taught me so much.”

Working alongside Jeremy in the band has capped off a fantastic couple of years for Andy.

As well as writing the music which led to the release of the album, he also wrote the music for a film called Celluloid, which was premiered at Palm Springs Film Festival, in California, where Andy performed live.

While Jeremy tours in America early next year, Andy will continue to focus on his own music.

But he admits should the chance come along, he would love to perform Steetley’s music live, especially back home in Hartlepool.

Question

You know it's funny I just came across a Various Artists album called The Music of Dingle which had a track called "The Foxhunter/The Silver Slipper/Pilleadh Wellingtons" which was listed as being by Sean Leahy/Jeremy Spencer and I thought "can't be", but I guess so! Thanks for posting about this. While I'm getting the V/A CD, anyone know where I can get a hard copy "original" CD of this Steetley deal?

John

I found two tracks on iTunes. 1 that Jeremy did with Mick. And another he did with Mick and John. Both from 2012.

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.

and they are????

One of which I'm guessing is the Excalibur III track which lists Mick and Jeremy, and there is another track that also lists Jeremy on his own.

There is also the Safe In Their Heart track with Mick, John and Jeremy from 2009.

Good catch! I thought Excalibur III was a II rehash, off to buy now! Still wish we knew the "origins" (no pun intended) for SITH...

Question

Long shot here but every copy of Excalibur III I've come across has mostly French liner notes. I'm working on the content for the discography page here for this album. Is there anyone here that has a copy of this CD with all English liner notes they can either send me scans of or post here (or better yet, just the text)? Or, for those able, would anyone be willing to transcribe them from French to English if I were to post here or send you scans of the liner notes and either post the results here or send them to me? (warning: it's a thick booklet, about 26 pages, a little more than half is in French) Thanks in advance for the consideration.

John
