Bob Welch Suggestions
I'm off to buy me some Bob Welch songs...I heard Devil Wind the other day and I like it. I have heard Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady (?) - (I am really bad with remembering song titles) . and maybe a few others. I really like his voice.
Can anyone suggest albums or particular songs to look for? Thnx |

Well, since you mentioned Sentimental Lady and Ebony Eyes, you could start with the French Kiss album. I think with the layered vocals, you actually get to appreciate his voice more on this album than you do on a FM album.
And I've got to say that Christine sounds wonderful on Easy to Fall. Three Hearts is also good if you like Welch at his poppiest. I think you can get an import with both of these albums on it. If you get his "Best Of" album, you get more of his work from a longer time period. It has several songs from when he was with Paris and also some of his non-hit, less commercial endeavors and I think you get a broader feel for him all around: writer, singer, producer, etc. Michele |

His entire French Kiss, Three Hearts & The Other One albums are great.
Individual songs from other albums: Nightmare Don't Rush The Good Things B-666 Two To Do Remember I'll Dance Alone Don't Let Me Touch You And a few from his first post-Mac band, Paris: La Porte Etroite (The Narrow Gate) Black Book Religion Starcage Blue Robin Big Towne, 2061 Pale Horse, Pale Rider Slave Trader But, then, I'm biased, so "just get 'em all".

Considering what you mentioned as what you've heard, get the recommendations people have already posted, especially his 70's work.
But my favorite album (and I have most of them, except Paris work) is Bob Welch Looks At Bop. I never tire of this album. He did an album somewhat recently where he re-recorded his old solo and FM songs. Hit and miss with this album though. |

Oh yeah, Be-Bop is a great album! Quote:
Actually, two. His Fleetwood Mac Years & Beyond and His Fleetwood Mac Years & Beyond, Volume 2. Both really good albums, but, I prefer the original recordings on most of the tunes. The "new" songs on the two albums are great. And, at his website, you can download about three albums worth of NEW tunes (and covers) that he's done lately.

I love "Church" from (I think) Three Hearts.

Bob Welch is an artist who didn't stand still. His post-FM group, Paris, was a power-rock trio. Very good, in my opinion, but not much like his Fleetwood Mac output. Then he went "pop" with his solo career, and those albums (listed by others in this thread) would probably be more familiar sounding to a FM fan. There is also some FM contribution to several of these records. I don't own the Bop record. Isn't it jazz? I realize Bob has some strong jazz influences in his songs, but in general I hate anything that's straight jazz, so I haven't bought it, but I suppose that's a mistake. I actually really like the two recent re-recordings albums; he covers some interesting Mac songs (by other writers) that you wouldn't expect him to, and puts some interesting twists into some of his own songs. He recorded those solo in his home studio.
This is a hard question to answer; I'd recommend picking up whatever you can find (that you feel is within your budget) and decide for yourself what you like. Bob Welch is my second favorite of all of the Fleetwood Mac members (after Christine). Who else thinks the cover picture on Bob Welch's "The Other One" is a spoof of the cover of "Tusk"?

No problems. These were some files I found on the internet. I've unpacked Big Towne and found there's quite a lot of digital skips.
I haven't unpacked Paris as I originally got a copy of that courtesy of stevemac here on the Ledge. |
