Cheese & Grain Frome 30th May 2010
Peter Green & Friends were back in the West Country for the third time within 9 months and I'm beginning to feel spoilt!
I thought the Moles club event was something special (which it was) but to me the performance at the Cheese & Grain takes some beating. This is a much bigger venue which was packed out with a very appreciative audience who gave a very warm welcome. .... and here is another video When The Lights Go Out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z55OjFd8R9g You asked a question above about what was being said at the front of this clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMJ1yv2xVCM This is what I believe it was all about trying to piece it all together: At some point before this song, PG & MD were talking about their upcoming break (before Italy) and going Fishing and to the Fish shop (meaning Fishing Tackle / Gear shop). At the intro to this clip PG, (being comical), was talking about going to the Fish (& Chip) shop to eat "soft roe" hence why he then opens in response to "aye" from MD with "soft roes yeh you get in Fish" etc. In case you may be wondering, "soft roes" are a Fish & Chip shop "delicacy" over here, usually called Cod Roe, and served in batter - hope that makes some sort of sense - Cod Roe is actually one of my favourites ! The version I remember is Brook Benton's, and I listened to that thing over and over and over. Has this song been part of Peter's shows prior to this? As his voice ages, it becomes the perfect vehicle for songs like this. And of course the guitar tone is, as someone else said, sublime. I could listen to this clip all day (and I probably will...)
