Default green manalishi - master of sparks

All is quiet on the greeny front...hope he's doing OK.

Anyway, I've been thinking of this for a while . Has anyone heard "Master of sparks" by ZZ TOP? From the "Tres hombres" album. In my opinion that song is VERY derivative of Green Manalishi, basically the same riff.
In fact, you can hear a lot of Greeny influence in Billy Gibbon's playing, at least during the early 70's. So maybe it's more than a tribute than a rip-off.

Oh, yeah, definite Greeny influence on Billy's playing.

Other ZZ Top examples of Peter's influence:

Intro section of "Brown Sugar"
Just Got Back From Baby's
Sure Got Cold When The Rain Fell
Bar-B-Q
Just Got Paid
Blue Jean Blues
Asleep In The Desert
Jesus Just Left Chicago

And, let's not forget that ZZ Top covered "Rattlesnake Shake" during their 1976 "Worldwide Texas Tour".

They did that? That's cool... have to find that!
"Blue jean blues" is very Greeny indeed. Not that Gibbons is a copycat, he has a very personal sound, but you can hear very much Peter's influence in a song like that. In my book, every zz top album up to 1977 is worth owning.

i agree with cD 100%. the obvious peter green influence disappears in the mid 70's but that's no reason not to buy them all. there is great material on every one to present.

I wouldn't say it "disappears", it just is a little tougher to recognize.

Some of those '80s tunes such as "She Loves My Automobile", "Tubesnake Boogie", "Rough Boy", "I Need You Tonight", "My Head's In Mississippi", etc...I can still hear Peter's "touch" in Billy's playing...the subtle way that Billy goes for "feel" instead of "speed" or "flash". It just isn't as obvious as those early '70s albums, is all. Sort of how Eric Clapton's influence on Peter never really left him, just took on a different form.

Billy's vocals on "Jesus just left Chicago" sounds very influenced by Peter.
