Signs of the times
The Barbara Hubbard media center in the Pan American Center is like a shrine to the many entertainment acts that have come through Las Cruces, N.M.

It's also a reminder of how much things have changed.

For instance, the big poster announcing an Olivia Newton-John concert in 1976 included ticket prices. The best seat in the house went for $6. And, no, I didn't leave out a number. You could sit in the upper deck for three bucks.

Boston stopped in during 1978 and the best reserved seats were $8.

By 1987, Fleetwood Mac came through slightly after their peek of popularity and drew $16 for the best seats.

Then, of course, Prince -- or whatever symbol they were calling him in 1997 -- had the gall to charge $65 for the best seats. Way overrated and overpriced.

Of course, these days, seeing any good show for under a C-note is just about impossible. But for those of us who remember scraping together 10-bucks for a great night of music, the room is bringing back a lot of memories.

I remember paying an outrageous $6 each for my 10th row center seats for Eric Clapton in 1974.

And, was incensed at paying $7 for 3rd row center seats for Fleetwood Mac at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on Thanksgiving Night, 1975 (with Bob Welch sitting directly in front of me).

You can't even see a movie - let alone a concert - for six bucks anymore.

You practically have to take out a loan just to buy a damn t shirt at the show.
