I don't know any either and apart from slowing things down for the same reason as you I don't generally like the sound since it usually makes the song sound "fatter" than I'm used to. Though I have a program that slows things down for listening without changing the pitch at all, so I don't even get that most of the time.

If I ever get good at writing songs I'm gonna find a way to incorperate a slowed down solo/section

As for the sped up solos. He could do it just for the sound . I'm recording a song just for fun and I'm speeding up a solo just for the sound of it, even though I can play it at full tempo anyway. Just gives a different tone and frantic-ness.
