Who's the better guitarist...Blah, blah, blah...
It really doesn't matter. The better question is who's the most appropriate guitarist for a situation. I mean, the Beatles would have sucked, IMO, if Ginger Baker was their drummer, yet Ginger is a much more skilled, dare I say better drummer than Ringo Starr ever dreamed of being. But, Ringo was the more appropriate drummer for that particular situation. With this in mind, Rick was too much of a sideman in a band that needed a visionary, which they had with Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham. In terms of lead guitar abilities, Rick Vito was perhaps their best guitarist and could EASILY mop the floor with Lindsey's afro. The fact that Lindsey has opted to use a lead guitarist, really since the OOTC tour, should tell you that even he is aware of his limitations. Lindsey is a good finger-style guitarist in his own right, though Chet Atkins, Les Paul, almost any major bluegrass guitarist/banjo player, Joe Pass, and Andrés Segovia put Lindsey to shame. Lindsey's playing was the perfect compliment to what his bandmates were playing. Lindsey had the vision of how the band should sound, and knew how to make that happen. Lindsey was able to take songs at their most basic and turn them into modern masterpieces. I'd rank Lindsey's guitar playing at about fourth in terms of the assets he brought into Fleetwood, first being producer, second vocalist, and third songwriter.

I rank him as the best thing that happened to FM musically. I rank him the worst thing that happened to FM band-politically.
Anyone who splits up the mans guitarplaying from his songwriting and producing has not understood his talent.

"If I had to choose my main contributing factor to the band, it wouldn't be as a guitarist, a writer, or a singer; it would be as someone who knows how to take raw material from Christine [McVie] and Stevie [Nicks] and forge that into something."

come up with arguments dude. If you listen to all his demo's you'd understand what I mean. His guitarpatterns are mainly the start of his songs, his guitarparts are mainly his arrangementtools for the girlssongs, and his guitarideas propelled mainly his recovery after he left the band: If someone argues that his "newfound" rearrangement of Big Love hasn't been the start of composing songs like Red Rover, Say Goodbye and all those covers he recorded, you're stonedeaf. The fact that he mentions his own main contribution to FM being the arrangementskills on songs of others, doesn't argue the fact that 80 percent of it is based in layering guitars and vocals. I am NOT talking about excellent guitarskills to shine as a guitarist, i NEVER DID. I'm talking about playing guitar as his basic tool in writing, composing, arranging and even producing/recording: all of those techniques are based in figuring out how he could make his guitar sound different by playing with the recordings of guitarparts. That and fooling around with vocal-scapes are his main skills.
well, whatever. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who listens to the whole, and others just listen to the seperate parts and judge them seperately. Guitarplayers listen to guitarplayers through their own filters and parameters. Lindsey Buckingham plays guitar to write and arrange songs, he doesn't write songs to play guitar. And THAT makes him an outstanding (litterally) guitarist in my book, whatever you all guitarpenetrators state against it. PS: I apologise to all post-rumoursfans. This sh*t belongs in the LB-forum. But hey! I can't move it!
