BOTH are magnificent - each in their own way - Pat, having the technically POWERHOUSE voice and Bonnie having a voice lambent with emotion.

If I had a girl's voice, I would want Patsy Cline's voice - HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!

Then, Ann Wilson, Stevie in the 70's, Martha Davis, Natalie Merchant - any of those But, first and foremost Patsy Cline - SHEEBUS!!!!!!!

Scarily - I have been known to sound ALOT like Ethel Merman without trying

Get me near a karaoke bar and you'll be forced to hear my brilliant version of Some People (or possibly Rose's Turn if I'm feeling frisky) the entire night.

Or how about his white boy dancing during some of the songs?!? I love him, he is priceless. And he was really letting his English accent shine through which is adorable.

About "Under Pressure": can Gayle Ann Dorsey sing or what?!!? Filling Freddy's shoes ain't no easy task either! Wow. It gave me chills.

A few years ago, PBS aired a live tribute to Broadway songs hosted by Julie Andrews and Liza, of all people, came out and did a version of Some People that was chilling. I love Ethel Merman and Bette Midler, but jeezum crow, she sang the best version of that song that I've ever heard. And this was just after she lost all that weight and everyone was so worried about her. Knocked. It. Out. Of. The. Park.

I know!!! I never knew she could sing like that! Homegirl can project.

It's so hard to pick a favorite song from that concert, every one is so good. Life On Mars and Sunday are right up there, though, they're phenomenal. And I have much love Heathen (The Rays) and Reality. It blows the old Ziggy Stardust film out of the water, IMO.

No Bonnie Tyler? I'll put her on my list, then I know some people find her husky voice annoying (probably the same ones who claim Stevie sounds like a goat -whaevah!), but I think it's sexy as hell.

I agree with your above choices, and I'll add:

Fiona Apple
Lucinda Williams
Pat Benatar
Martina McBride
Natalie Maines

Ashlee Simpson

Liza (with a "Z" ) can BELT Gypsy. I LOVE Bernadette - but she is wrong for the part. Lupone or Liza should have had it. They have THAT voice. Interestingly, Liza's voice is not 1/2 of her mother's voice (pretty much no one will EVER have Judy's voice) - but Liza got the power behind Judy's voice - no doubt about it.

Rumor is they approached Lupone with it but she did not want to take on such an effort as her kid is getting older, etc. Also, I have to wonder if Patti's pipes could belt eight or nine shows a week - she is getting up there I still love her though

I liked Bernadette in the role, personally, but her interpretation of it just is not suited for Broadway. In a film version, definitely, but not on Broadway. When I saw her, I thought that because she didn't have the power in her voice that is required, she acted the songs out more than all the others who have played Mama Rose (which I greatly enjoyed her doing, she did it masterfully), which made everything much more subtle and it just didn't suit it onstage.

I've always liked Liza, she's very spunky, so...

I think she could do it. But we'll never know, unfortunately...

Child - Lupone would need no mic.
