Ann Wilson on the Future of Heart

Ann Wilson is currently working on her new solo release Immortal, which features covers of songs by artists who have recently passed away. But many are still wondering about any potential future plans with Heart.

If you remember, Ann and Nancy Wilson had a very public falling out due in large part to an incident in which Ann's husband Dean Wetter was arrested and convicted on charges of assault against Nancy's 16-year-old twin sons backstage at a Heart show in suburban Seattle.

When asked about possibly doing anything in the future with Heart backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony last Saturday (April 14), Ann had this to say:

"I don’t know. I just don’t know. I do know for a fact that it’ll never go back to being a meat and potatoes, ‘just play the hits and nothing more,’ writing it down old band. That’s why I stopped it, because I felt like it was beginning to disintegrate into commercialism. It was chasing the buck. Maybe that’s idealistic, but that’s what I had to do.”

Immortal is currently available for pre-order at AnnWilsonOfHeart.com. A release date has yet to be announced.

Nancy Wilson: ‘I Hold Out Hope For Heart’

When Ann Wilson announced on Jan. 10, 2017, that she was doing a solo tour, it was attributed to a break from Heart, which she and her sister Nancy have fronted since the early 1970s. Similarly, the younger sibling revealed 10 days later that she had started a Heart spin-off band called Roadcase Royale with several current Heart members. Nancy Wilson was quick to point out: “Roadcase Royale is a side project and not a replacement for Heart.”

Turns out there was a lot more to the sisters’ separate paths in 2017. On April 14, 2017, it was revealed that Ann Wilson’s husband, Dean Wetter, received a suspended sentence for allegedly choking Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons backstage at an Aug. 26, 2016 Heart concert in Auburn, Wash. Wetters had pleaded guilty on March 9 to two counts of fourth-degree assault. His plea agreement with the court includes two years of probation, counseling and no contact with his nephews. Wetter will not have to serve jail time.

Since then, Ann has continued with regular road work and begins a tour opening for Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers on July. (Tickets are available here and here.) She’s also revealed news of a studio album, Immortal, that honors many fellow classic rock stars that had recently passed, with covers of songs by David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Glenn Frey, and more.

For Nancy Wilson, 2017-18 was supposed to be a big year on the road as well. She and Roadcase Royale had released an album, First Things First, and landed the coveted opening slot for Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band’s big arena tour. However, after just seven dates, Seger was forced to postpone the remaining concerts due to back surgery. He gave an update of his medical condition on March 28 but there’s still no word on when he may return to the stage. That’s put Nancy Wilson and her new band in a bit of limbo.

And then, out of nowhere, Nancy Wilson tweeted a message yesterday (April 17) that should be encouraging to Heart fans:

“I believe Heart can make magic. Both with the classics that the fans love and other song discoveries that make new magical imprints as well.

“Heart is a great band with a lot of range. We are not confined by the oldies either done by others or our own. I hold out hope for Heart.”

By April 18, scores of fans had commented on Wilson’s tweet. @kozmicblues88 wrote: “The fans are holding out hope too. Not just for Heart, but for reconciliation as well. Love to you and your family!”

@aomorgan wrote: “Keeping hope and love alive for you two as sisters and as HEART.”

@CALyonsSoCal replied: “I also have hope there will be a reunion – new songs, old songs – either way I’m a fan to the end.”

Heart’s last appearance was on Oct. 22, 2016 at Riverdome in Bossier City, LA.

Watch several songs from that final performance

Ann's husband, in my opinion, is a total tool. First he marries Ann, after tearing himself away from his Facebook (gay) profile, and his 'job' as a 'social worker.' Then moves Ann out of Washington State to Florida. Then, the incident w/Nancy's sons goes as follows. They opened Ann's tourbus door. The dogs either got out or tried to get out. Dean put a chokehold on one of the boys. Major attention happened. The tour biggos said don't call the police. Somebody said it's legally required to call the police. Then after all this, Ann took Dean's side against Nancy's sons, who were clearly the victims of First Degree Assault. Ann stopped talking to Nancy except via text message. You can argue with me all you want to if you wish. This is what I know.

I remember when Chit Chat was the most popular forum here.

And Pepperidge Farms remembers, too...

This is already really old news. Heart is opening up for Def Leppard at one show that I am aware of in 2024. Most likely it will be multiple shows.

There's a third big act with them too. I've seen the ad, but can't remember who the third one is.

Based on the past quote above, it looks like Ann Wilson is eating her words. First, Heart reunited in December and the setlist was ALL hits - they even delved into most of the cheese heavy 80's catalog.

Next, Heart is on a summer tour opening for Def Leppard on a triple bill with Journey (featuring vocals by Arnel Pineda).

This is certainly "chasing the buck".

What would you do? I haven't looked into their net worth(s), but would you rather play the hits for 20k people, or album cuts for 2k people? Egos are a real thing, even when you're 75.

I'm so relieved to hear that Arnel is still there. Journey has been very cryptic for the past couple of years. I think Neil(Neal) Schon has become a dick? I love Arnel. His story is truly a Cinderella story. He seems very genuine and appreciative.

So much for the "stale" setlists.

If you want to sell all the seats, you've got to play the songs that casual listeners know.
