Mask has boring instrumentation. Strip the good vocals off the tracks, and you basically have a Toto or a Cruzados album. Greg Ladanyi engineered some good albums — Building the Perfect Beast, The Envoy — but this isn’t one of them. It’s really drudged-up, charmless MOR. It’s music for spending a day at the water park.

It might have been a little more interesting with the first choice of producers, Don Gehman? We’ll never know.

If Patrick Leonard (“Love Shines,” “Heart of Stone”) it would have been A LOT better.
