Steve Hackett plays like P. Green
This is a fragment of review of his 2006 album WILD ORCHIDS.
The Man In The Long Black Coat, unusually for Hackett is a cover – and a cover a Bob Dylan song at that. “It gave me the opportunity to sing like Johnny Cash and play guitar like the young Peter Green”, jokes Hackett. Has anybody heard it? I wonder which Greeny's track is an inspiration? Krzysztof |

Something more about this track from an interview
Q: Back to Man In The Long Black Coat – why did you record this particulary Bob Dylan song?
Steve Hackett: I like the lyric very much. It meant that I could take the approach of a country singer on it because the vocal is pitched more low. Also it gave me a change to set up a kind of athmosphere – a kind of New Orleans swamps athmosphere. Also I wanted to play the guitar in the style of Peter Green working wiht John Mayall in the early days. That’s the style of much of the guitar work. It was a chance to to get out my old Les Paul and playing slightly more bluesy more agressive. I’m allowing myself some more blues influence with this stuff. If you got an album of 70 minutes plus you can allow some blues influence without entirely disappointing people who wnat the more melodic side of my playing. But I find it’s nice to have both. |

It's funny Hackett chose that particular song - I had long thought it would be an excellent number for Green himself to cover - the spare arrangement is custom made for Green's guitar and the (near) spoken lyrics, suitable for his voice -
With all due respect to Hackett, the "Green sound" he aspires to is not that from the Bluesbreakers years, it is much later - Hackett does like his atmosphere though, juicing the track with nature sounds (night birds and crickets) - a bit much, but coming from a veteran Prog-rocker, fitting I had not heard about this before and appreciate your posting

The Supernatural ??? !!!
There is a tune (bonus track) called "The Well at the World's End" on the Japanese edition of "DARTOWN" CD. In my opinion it should be called "The Supernatural / The Well at the World's End" and Peter Green should be mentioned as a composer.
You can listen to (or download) this track from the site http://www.stevehackett.com/mp3_com/. What do you think about this track? Krzysztof |

That certainly is nothing other than Hackett playing "The Supernatural".
It's not really clear if Hackett takes the credit for the composition, but I don't see anything on his website that indicates otherwise: http://www.stevehackett.com/darktown/bonus.html "An influence of Peter Green and latin rhythms and an excuse for those notes that seem to go on forever. " That's more than an "influence"!! |

Yes I agree! This is The Supernatural even if he does go off on a few improvisational interludes .If a jazz player was doing The Lady is a Tramp ,for example, and then improvising as it progressed far away form the original melody , but with same chord structure, it would still be The Lady is a Tramp and they probably would have introduced it as such or put it on the record as such . The Jazz world seems to do it correctly .

Shame on him!
Same with Tom Petty's "Trip To Pirate's Cove" on his Mojo album is pretty much just Peter's "Slabo Day" with lyrics.

Bulls**t
It's one thing for David Gilmour to play "Albatross" with Jools Holland on television, out of respect for Peter Green.
Without Peter Gabriel Hackett has nothing, while Steve Howe has thrived with Yes reunions. Despite Peter Green's departure from public life in 2010, he does have attourneys'. Maybe Green allowed it....??? Not to mention that Tom Petty has been a HUGE Peter Green fan on his one hour radio show on American Sirius/XM sattelite radio for at least five years. Is it possible that Green allowed or liked Petty "borrowing" in exchange for exposure on his Buried Treasure radio show? Last edited by slipkid; 03-08-2013 at 01:35 AM.. |
