Green/Hendrix meetings
I was re-reading Christopher Hjort’s wonderful Strange Brew, and came across a comment dated Tuesday 13th Dec 1966. It’s a comment from Mitch Mitchell (drummer with Jimi Hendrix Experience):-
Green gave Hendrix a great run for his money. He was one of the few guitarists who wasn’t in awe of him; you know, he didn’t say “Oh God, I’ve seen Hendrix, I’m going to die” Further on, Thurs Dec 5th 1968 it appears that they jammed together at Steve Pauls Scene Club…. in New York. This started me wondering how many times had they jammed together,..... and how often was Eric Clapton present…. Just curious |

According to both Hjort's and Dinky Dawson's books, Peter Green played twice with Jimi Hendrix while Fleetwood Mac was in New York City in early December 1968. First was when Green (and possibly Danny Kirwan as well) jammed with Hendrix at a club following a show both had gone there to see. A few days later, Hendrix apparently sat in for awhile with Fleetwood Mac during one of their shows in NYC. It doesn't seem like any recordings were made of that first jam, but I suppose it's possible that Dinky Dawson might have recorded the show when Hendrix sat in with the band. Never heard of a recording of this turning up though.
I've never read about any other occasion when Green and Hendrix played together other than those two, and Eric Clapton was not present either time. He was in England at that time finishing up the final Cream recordings and then preparing for his appearance in the Rolling Stones Rock 'n' Roll Circus. |
