Sadly, I think he would want that. It seems like for whatever reason that's a relationship he wants to keep trying to mend. Maybe he has regrets about past behaviors. (Though that is most definitely a two-way street).

She, on the other hand, seems to have genuinely decided she's done, and there's nothing that can mend it.

I also think of her famous, often repeated statement that one day one of them will be sitting alone on a bed hearing that the other one has died..
