Default Tom Petty covers Slabo Day! Kind of!

Tom on his new record:

"I love Peter Green! He's one of my idols. I could listen to Peter Green all day. And that's very much what I had in mind on a lot of the [new] stuff. I wanted to get a sound that mixed up say the Chicago Chess stuff and John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, early Jeff Beck Group. These were records I played to the engineer a lot before we began the project," says Petty. "I told him, 'I want the guitars right up loud, as loud as the vocals when [Mike] plays,' and I think we succeeded at that. Mike's just amazing. He really stepped up and did his part."

The track Trip to Pirates Cove off the new album is essentially Slabo Day with lyrics on top. Check it out.

Yeah, that's just a little too close for comfort.

There's an obscure tune by The Animals from the mid 60's called "Cheating"....Tom "Petty-ized" it into the song we now know as "Breakdown". Just set off every "plagiarism" alarm in my head....just as this new "Pirate" tune of Petty's did when I heard it after clicking the link above.

(Sorry, I don't have a link to compare...the Animals tune isn't on any of the CD compilations that are in print. I have it on a 2 LP "anthology" that never made it to CD)

Pretty good call on that comparison, chiliD.

Cheating:

There are certainly loads of songs that "borrow" from earlier songs.

Good find!!!!! WOW!!

The thing that gets me is that these songs go unlitigated, but Lennon uses one little line from a Chuck Berry song in "Come Together" and half his income from the song goes to Chuck....and don't even get me started about the "My Sweet Lord/He's So Fine" comparison.

I'm REALLY surprised that Petty hasn't been prosecuted for the "Cheating/Breakdown" thing...they're for all intents identical from plagiaristic standards....songwriters have lost millions in royalties over MUCH less "borrowing" of melody or lyrical lines.

The more famous you are.... Don't forget that a legal team representing Glenn Miller's estate (the deceased Big Band trombone band leader), tried to sue the Beatles for using the "In the Mood" saxophone riff during the end of "All You Need Is Love".

George Harrison could've sued Paul Weller for "Start!", which is a pure rip-off of "Taxman"!

Actually I'm really surprised the original songwriters for The Monkees "Pleasant Valley Sunday" never sued the songwriters of the "Friends" TV show theme.

In Tom Petty's case (with the current album), he's trying to do a service for Peter Green. He isn't trying steal, or rip him off.

Carlos Santana, and Jimmy Page have already stolen his guitar solo accents (Carlos Santana), or PG's method of how to play slow blues. (Page is just a pretender compared to Green). I'd litigate both guitarists for trying to steal the soul of a mentally ill guitarist who should've been headlining big rock concerts with his guitar prowess in a major ROCK band named Fleetwood Mac.
