She's not actually allowed on Facebook nor does she have an account. She has never had an account either, just for the record.

Yeah didn't she make a comment about not being allowed on facebook because her parents said it was full of online predators...

Just saying....sometimes someone needs to judge the parents. Sure we don't know the whole situation, but in this world sometimes there are far too many people minding their own business when perhaps they should be interferring...
You're a social worker Jannie (as is my wife) I'm sure that you are well aware that what goes on behind closed doors can often be very bad for the child. The internet is full of dangers of that I have no doubt (a young girl was killed in Australia just last month by someone she met on facebook who she went to meet), but I'd be pretty confident in saying that there are many more kids who are in danger at home than in danger on the internet. No there isn't anything I can do about the situation, I'm 10,000 miles away, but perhaps it isn't a bad thing if sometimes we don't just turn a blind eye... |

You know I was thinking - when they were going to Stevie, how was Miranda gonna get away from her dad to meet people anyway?

Seriously, you're comparing a parent banning their child from a message board to an honour killing? Surely that's just as much as an overreaction.
God, I remember my parents being overly-cautious about certain things when I was a youngster. A few years go by and it becomes an anecdote, something you (and your parents) laugh about. Maybe Miranda's parents are as bad as people are making them out to be, maybe they are good, decent people who overreacted. At the end of the day, we don't know. And Miranda isn't even reading this so I don't even see the point in attacking them for something we don't know the ins and outs of.

As in, if they are "complete nutbags" (and I'm not saying that they are) then perhaps it isn't the right answer to say that its not our business. Turning a blind eye, walking away, not questioning - that is what allows abuse to continue. Does that apply in this case? Probably not and I'm not saying it does...it doesn't hurt for people to be concerned though, the world would be a better place if people were more concerned about others. ...and that, is all I've got to say on the matter |

Well, I like to think I am concerned for others. I don't think I'm a bad person just because I don't think a parent banning their child from a message board out of concern for their safety (or even for their schoolwork maybe! We don't know) is that much of a big deal in the scheme of things. She'll probably barely remember it in years to come. It's sad for those here who liked her but like I say, in a few years she'll be 18 and can post as much as she wants on any messageboard she likes.

My point is that it's not fair to judge a situation without all of the facts. In this case we pretty much have NO facts. If her parents are dangerous and emotionally abusive, we here on The Ledge would likely NOT be the ones to figure this out and call CPS. Believe me, I am a child advocate, 100%. I also work with kids whose parents wouldn't know what their kids were looking at on the internet if their life depended upon it, nor would they care. We have no idea which category Miranda's parents fall in and as I said, it's not our business. This is not turning a blind eye; it's being realistic.
Honestly, if folks want to bash her parents here, they have every right to do so. I'm not going to delete posts or close the thread over it! I just disagree with making absolute statements with little information. Carry on. |
