Beasts of Burden etc...
Hi
Sharksfan2000: After hearing BoB again, it sounds to me as Nigel is singing the first verse, and that Peter takes over from then... or are my ears wrong? Does anybody know if Trojan will release another Vaudeville Years volume? Or will they stop with Vaudeville Years and Showbiz Blues? I believe there must be hours and hours of jamming ala Madge Sessions and Underway full length version in the vaults!! Also, some years ago there was a Peter Green discussion forum on the internet called Views For Greeny (anybody remember?). One time there was a discussion going about a planned CD release called something like "Guitar God(s)". The first volume was going to focus on Duane Allman. BUT it would also contain acoustic jamming and demos by Allman and Peter Green!! These had been done around and after Peter left FM, when he was travelling in the USA. A member of the forum told that one of the guys on the CD project had said that Peter did a lot of demos and jamming when travelling in the USA, and that a second volume would contain mostly Peter Green material. Unfortunately no more was heard, and I haven't found out if the CD(s) were ever released. Does anybody of you know the fate of the project? Was it just a joke or do the recordings really exist? I think it is quite possible that there are some recorded stuff from the time when Peter travelled and jammed with people. Maybe they are still unreleased due to economical or legal reasons... It would have been great!! Daniel |

I have not seen nor heard of those CDs since reading about them on that "Views For Greeny" site.
There is a live recording of Duane Allman & Peter Green together jamming with the Grateful Dead in heavy circulation around both ABB & GD sites. The Rhino remaster re-issue of Then Play On (whenever the get around to it) might cover some of the things that didn't appear on either Vaudeville Years set.

Any early 70's post-Mac demos or jamming would be fun to hear. I think his guitar work from this period is uneven, but the best of it is amazing stuff. |

Okay, I have to ask.
Is "Sharksfan" a reference to San Jose's hockey team?

I listened again to Beasts of Burden and I'd have to agree with Daniel about Peter taking over on the vocals after the first verse. His vocal style sounds to me a bit different from his late Mac days, so I'm sure that's what threw me off at first, but I think it is him. |

Yeah I know about the live jamming with Peter, Duane and Grateful Dead. But I haven't got hold of them yet. Are they good? Sound quality?
It is true that his playing post Mac in the early 70s is uneven. Sometimes is it wonderful, as on the Toe Fat 2 record, and Memphis Slim's album. Then on the other hand you got things like Caledonia on the BB King In London - It's not BAD, it's just ... ot like the solo on There'll Be Changes on Toe Fat 2. Caledonia appeared on a BB King Greatest hits CD one time with Peter's part deleted. The liner notes said that it was shortened by request of one of the players (Peter). Then there is Country Joe McDonald's Hold On It's Coming album, which I actually think is great!! I don't think Peter's playing there is like anything else he's recorded. Peter appears on three tracks, Air Algiers, Only Love Is Worth This Pain and Mr. Big Pig. I do not know much of McDonald's music, but I think the rest of the album also is pretty cool at times. It's not BAD, it's just ... Not like the solo on There'll Be Changes on Toe Fat 2. I cant' wait to hear the re-issue of Then Play On!!!! |

I agree with you on the Country Joe tracks. Haven't heard the whole album, but I just heard the three that Peter plays on for the first time recently and I really like his playing on "Only Love Is Worth This Pain" in particular. Have to agree on "Caledonia" as well, not one of Peter's best moments there. I noticed on Mario's sessionography that Peter is credited on one track on an album (From Now Until Then) by Richard Kerr in '73. Has anyone heard this? Is it interesting enough musically to track down a pricey used LP for this one track or is it more "for collectors only"? |

Yeah, I haven't listened to that one in a while but the guitar in BMF can't have been anything that memorable or I would've said something about it there.

The two tracks with Peter on Toe Fat 2 are "A New Way" and "There'll Be Changes". "A New Way" starts with a sort of soft instrumental intro with Peter doing wah-wah (A bit like End Of The Game jamming). Then it explodes in some prog rock theme with vocals and stuff. (Ok, I know it.. I'm not that good at describing music. It's like "fishing for architecture" or what (Zappa)).
My favourite is "There'll Be Changes" - a 12 bar blues track again with Peter playing FENOMENAL wah-wah guitar!! I don't like the singer that much but it's fantastic track. I'm still not that much into the rest of the album, but it's mainly quite heavy prog rock. The Richard Kerr LP is sort of soft pop.. too soft in places for me, actually Peter's guitar solo on "Be My Friend" is nice and moving, but I'd say the LP as whole is more for collectors. |
