Default Dogville?

Yesterday was Mother's Day and since my mom and I are both big movie buffs, I took her to see "Dogville" with Nicole Kidman at the local art-house. This place is a real dive and they play the flicks in their basement (the bathroom even has some holes and arrows on the stall walls, if you catch my drift...). BUT - it really adds to the fun of seeing movies there. (You'd love it, Marissa.) For those who have seen the movie:

(SPOILERS)

What a brilliant, brilliant, shocking movie. I left that place in a state of vertigo. First off, I was shocked that Nicole Kidman would make a three-hour art flick with no set. There, literally, was no set! It all took place on a very small soundstage where houses and roads were drawn with CHALK. There no doors to the houses, but the actors have to pretend there are and open doors that aren't there.

The cast blew me away. Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Ben Gazarra, Chloe Sevigny, James Caan, Patricia Clarkson, John Hurt, Philip Seymour Hall, they were all fantastic.

BUT THE ENDING!!! I was stunned with the last twenty minutes!! I mean, she had everyone killed. Everyone except the dog. And I was shocked that the filmmakers had the audacity to actually show the baby being killed with a machine gun. And when Kidman said "Kill two of her children and tell her if she can hold back her tears, the others can live," I couldn't believe it. Doctrine of Stoicism.

Anyways, that was one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life and I'm going to get it off of eBay if it costs me an arm and a leg.
