Friendship in suburbs (like Desperate housewives)

Yes, I'm hooked with this show, too.

But I have a question. Is it usual to have close friendship at suburbs, like the 4 ladys of this show? I mean, I've been in US many times, and I agree with other (foreign) people who have been in suburbs, that people don't make friendship at neighborhoods. Just a kind "hello", "good morning", etc. But they don't usually go to dinner to the family next house.

I realized that when I visited relatives in a NJ suburb, as I did with friends in California and Florida. I didn't see children playing in the street, my nephews weren't friends of their neighbors. They usually play at the school or fields, or they go to the mall.

Is it common to stablish friendship with neighbors, as I see in D.H.?

And what about Canada, UK, and other countries? (for the ledgies of the world).

Btw, in Peru is very common to make close friendship with neighbors, as to have close fights, too, ha haaa

I've lived in suburban neighborhoods all my life (though none quite as affluent as Wisteria Lane ) and have never seen families so involved in each others lives. There's always the people you wave to on the street, or say good morning to or whatever, but in general I've never seen neighborly relationships like the ones on TV. And this is all just my two cents of course. I'm sure everyones experience is different.

Ehhhh - I think it happened a lot more in the 50's, 60's & even 70's when it was more common to have a lot of stay-at-home moms. My mom is really good friends with about 4 or 5 of our neighbors & has been for almost 40 years. They've even taken vacations together.

I don't think it happens as much anymore - I mean, I'm friendly with my neighbors, but we don't hang out. Well, we did start hanging out with this one couple, but I have since determined that the wife is a bit of a psycho, so I'm trying to keep my distance as much as possible! Anyway, most moms work nowdays in the US, so there's not as much time for chatting over coffee, IMO.

I'm a little late on this thread, but for what it's worth, my neighborhood is great. I live on a little cul-de-sac, 3 houses, and we had several block parties right in the cul-de-sac this summer with about 8 families. Of those 8, I feel comfortable calling 4 of them any time I may need a favor. One family I've known for 17 years. We bought this house 2 years ago because of them. In fact most of us are getting together at one of the houses for a new years eve party. Now, do we LOOK like the desperate housewives? Definitely not, but we're all pretty good friends, as are all the kids (12 total).
