Default How do YOU spell ‘Rumours’?

I always thought this quote was interesting:

“Ask any grammar teacher of the era how an entire generation of American students unknowingly took to spelling the word rumor with two u’s for years thereafter.”

(Liner notes on the cultural impact of the album - ‘Rumours’ double CD re-release, 2004)

Asking American Ledgies here - is this still true? I went to school in Canada where we follow British spelling, so I was always use to ‘Rumours’ with the second ‘u’. Writing it as ‘rumors’ in class will get you points off! Same for ‘color’, instead of ‘colour’.

Anyways, I’m curious about how you guys south of the border spell the word. Because of your fandom for FM, do you find yourself intentionally or unintentionally spelling ‘rumours’ the Brit way? I mean using the word in general, not in any context to the album.

I spell rumor with the u if I'm trying to be cutesy; otherwise I spell it the American way. After all, I'm an Uh-MAAR-kun!

I spell it the British way.

Then again I always find the cute way to spell a word. For example, for the day of the week, I always write Sundae, the ice cream version, instead of Sunday.

"Rumours"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To be honest, when my LA Honors teacher told me i was spelling it wrong i kinda just looked at her like, "whaaa?" After my explanation, she allowed me to spell it that way. That particular spelling is just not as common in the US

I spell it rumor just because I know my friends would make fun of me otherwise. But I always spell "colour" that way because of Pink Floyd.

well, my ap eng teacher said (my mama said fooseball is the devil!!) that even though in the US it's spelled rumor, it's considered "proper" english to spell the word as "rumour". It's the same thing with the word "colo(u)r" but we don't spell "gray" as grey...chyeaa something like that

and as we speak (or type...whatever) my laptop is telling me that I spelled rumour wrong-- oh but rumor is correct lol.
I spell it as rumour because it looks better that way

I use the Americanized spelling, unless I'm actually talking about Rumours, the album.

I'm an American, so I spell it the American way.

Exactly. Same here, Vicky. I'm an American, not an American't!

I've caught myself doing it in here a few times!

Sometimes I do it intentionally as a pun too - - - Like I might say something along the lines of, "I heard some Rumours that Stevie may be performing in Atlantic CITY soon!"
